🍊 The War of the Oranges (1801)

In 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte was pressuring Spain to invade Portugal to force them to stop trading with the British. The Spanish weren’t exactly thrilled about attacking their neighbors, but they didn’t want to upset Napoleon.
So, Godoy, the Spanish Prime Minister, led an army into the Portuguese region of Alentejo. It was technically an invasion, but it felt more like a very aggressive picnic.

📜 The “Siegework”

The Spanish army marched across the border and captured a few towns with almost zero resistance. Instead of a bloody battle, the two armies mostly just watched each other from a distance, seemingly waiting for someone to tell them they could go home.

During the “siege” of the town of Elvas, Godoy noticed something: the orange trees were in full bloom.
🧺 The Most Passive-Aggressive Gift in History
Instead of sending a demand for surrender or a volley of cannonballs, Godoy had his soldiers pick two large branches of fresh oranges.

He sent these oranges to the Queen of Spain (who was rumored to be his lover) with a message that basically said: “I have reached the walls of Elvas, and I am sending you these oranges.”

• The Message: It was his way of saying, “Look, I’m doing the ‘war’ thing you asked for. Can we stop now?”

• The Peace Treaty: The Portuguese, seeing that the Spanish clearly didn’t want to be there, quickly signed the Treaty of Badajoz. The “war” lasted only about 18 days.

🏛️ The Aftermath

The conflict is officially known in history books as the War of the Oranges.

The Result?

Portugal lost a small border town (Olivença), paid a fine, and closed its ports to the English. Spain got to tell Napoleon they “won.” And the Queen of Spain got a fresh snack. It remains one of the shortest and least-violent “invasions” ever recorded—proving that sometimes, vitamin C is more effective than heavy artillery.
