This beautiful collection of miniature paintings representing various Indian folk art styles from Kashmir in the north to Kerala in the south and Gujarat in the west to Assam in the east.

As you observe, the Tree of Life, Kalpataru is an embodiment of celestial and vital energies. It is a divine tree that grants wishes. It is also a representation of a person’s personal growth into a unique human being as different experiences shape them into who they are. It symbolizes one’s individuality, as trees are all unique with their branches sprouting at different points and directions.

Our objective is to provide an exposure and an insight into the rich and diverse heritage and culture of India. This is a small effort from our side to bring forth the lost and forgotten forms and techniques of folk art.

Indian Folk Art Exhibition “Pankhudee”

KALPAVRUKSHA
This art piece is very close to my heart as it comes from my native Gujarat. Lippan kaam or Chhittar Kaam, the traditional clay art from Gujarat was mostly executed by the women in order to decorate and beautify their homes. Women used mud and animal dung to create motifs on the wall, both inside and outside their circular huts called bhungis. It is also called a clay relief art work, where a low relief patterns are created using clay and embellished with mirrors. As you observe, the tree of life, Kalpataru is an embodiment of celestial and vital energies. It is a divine tree that grants wishes. It symbolizes one’s individuality as trees are all unique with their branches, sprouting at different points and in different directions. It is also a representation of a person’s personal growth into a unique human being as different experiences shape them into who they are. The mandala, as a womb around the tree, depicts the spiritual journey starting from the outside to the inner core, it is symbolic of the cosmos or the vast universe around us. The national bird Peacock signifies beauty, royalty, love, rebirth and passion. The Lotus stands for the union of earth, water and sky, its open and closed petals indicate the ups and downs of life and the multiplicity of the universe.
