This art week Cuadro is proud to present the latest chapter in the evolution of Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim’s visual language.

The artist continues to look within himself to uncover forms and symbols that he believes are universal and primordial. His oeuvre has taken him on a 30-year journey that spans multiple media, from land art to sculpture, painting to installation.

The exhibition at Cuadro runs in parallel to a retrospective exhibition curated by Shaikha Hoor Al Qasimi at the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Mohammed Ibrahim’s hand painted mixed media installation “Lines” fills a room at Abu Dhabi Art. The work is a continuation of his series conceived in 1995. Repetition of form and line plays a significant role in the artist’s oeuvre. Mark making for Ibrahim is almost subconscious. A physical mantra that repeats itself over and over. In conversation with the Artist he tells us that the lines were first inspired by the tally-marks made by water sellers as they made their rounds to neighborhood homes. The vendor would draw a mark on the door with every delivery and charge the family at the end of the month. The image of the lines was ingrained in the artists mind and manifests itself in this and other series by Mohammed Ibrahim. His installation “Khorfakkan” is also on display at the entrance to the fair. Other works by this pioneering UAE Artist are on view at our booth.

In conjunction with ADTCA, Manal AlDowayan has installed a commissioned artwork in the Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO protected heritage site. In her work, “you are from me and I am from you”, the artist studies the unseen, mapping root systems with ground penetrating radar and presenting them as an encounter between the public and an alternate, unseen universe. The viewer is invited to walk through the artwork and is eventually guided into ta clearing where the palm roots were mapped. The installation opens to the public on Friday November 10th at 4 PM.

Highlights from our booth at Abu Dhabi Art. Manal Al Dowayan‘s “The Choice” from the series of the same name, executed in 2006. One of the hallmarks of a work of contemporary art is “does the piece serve as a historical marker?” AlDowayan’s oeuvre continues to confront its audience with themes that challenge the status quo. A silent protest against inequality. With the lifting of the driving ban on women in Saudi Arabia, “The Choice” stands as beacon of hope and progress- of change.

Sneak peak at our booth at Abu Dhabi Art. Manal Aldowayan’s “Esmi” takes center stage. The participatory artwork anchors the booth and is inscribed with the names of Saudi women. The piece speaks of the recent phenomenon of not speaking the names of women in Saudi Arabia. Almost as if to speak them would bring shame. Manal questions this by stating that this is neither a religious nor cultural practice. It happened in recent history, and the practice needs to be eradicated.
