Six types. Plenty of overlap. Somewhere in here is you, probably the person you learned to make from, and very likely the person you taught along the way. I have met every one of these maker personalities over the years, and depending on the project, I can easily be three of them at once. The Starter, the Finisher, the Improviser, the Planner, the Collector, the Perfectionist... making has a funny way of revealing exactly who we are.

Knitting for a contemporary interior is a personal favorite of mine. I have such a soft spot for midcentury design, the clean lines, warm woods, and all that incredible furniture that still feels completely current today. The Diamond Throw fits right into that world... graphic enough to hold its own, but soft enough to take the seriousness out of a design classic. Handknits and great furniture make surprisingly good companions.

I was back at my Cricket loom this weekend, and I had forgotten just how much I love playing with texture. Thick yarn beside thin, soft wool against something a little more structured... even the simplest weave starts to feel completely different. These small woven cushions are easy to make, but they bring so much texture into a room. Exactly the kind of little handmade object that can quietly become the eye-catcher.

There is something very satisfying about crocheting an object and then deliberately putting it through a process that changes it completely. In Settling In, Belgian maker Veerle De Niel of does exactly that with her Felted Shopper. Crochet gives it the shape, felting gives it the character... dense, soft, sturdy, and much more like fabric than crochet by the time it comes out. Every completed piece carries its own history, even after the last stitch. The moments I put it down, picked it back up, changed my mind halfway through. None of that disappears just because the piece is done.

I can look at something I made two years ago and remember exactly where I was sitting when I got a section wrong and had to start again. The object holds that, even if nobody else can see it.

Nothing handmade is ever really finished. It just stops changing shape.

I love waffle stitch for the way it turns yarn into something almost architectural, but for me the real pleasure here is the combination of very different fibers. Sometimes the best part of crochet is simply putting two unlikely yarns next to each other and seeing what they do together.

Pick your circle on each line and tell me: which one gives you away first?

There are no right answers here... only very recognizable ones. You follow the pattern or you get four rows in and start negotiating. You keep one project alive or ten and call it variety. You swatch, or you gamble and find out at the worst possible moment. None of it makes you better at this, it just explains why some projects fly off the needles and others sit in a basket for two years.

I knitted this little pouch about 25 years ago, and somehow it has followed me ever since. Not because it is particularly remarkable, but because I still remember how proud I was when I finished it. That feeling of making something with your own hands and thinking, I actually did this. Funny how a tiny object can hold onto a moment for you long after you have forgotten so many others. A small reminder from the past to start a new week of making.

Looking back to a couple of months ago, when I had the pleasure of sharing my interview with Lisa Meissner of .maane.

Lisa’s work is so precise and beautifully constructed that you could easily assume it is machine knit... but every piece is made by hand. Her entire collection is stunning, and for KOEL she created the gorgeous Vector Pillow pattern you see here.
