Building Knowledge: an inventory of strategies

The installation at the Arsenale by the Indian architect Anupama Kundoo, which can be visited for the whole six months the Exhibition lasts, illustrates the knowledge process at the base of architectural planning and design.

Knowledge and conception are two fundamental elements in the work of an architect, between which there must be integration, and Anupama Kundoo has sought to represent this integration by displaying her most innovative projects, using the Laminam ceramic slabs from the Calce collection, in the Tortora shade as a surface to support and set the tone for the installation.

On the one hand, 40 plinths covered with 3mm-thick slabs show the “fruit” of her studies (the sectioned models on a 1:50 scale of his best-known buildings); on the other, 6 tables with 12mm-thick tops show the “roots” of her research and experimentation (the models on a scale of 1:5 and the samples of materials typical of the project architect’s desk).

In the central part is the life-size construction of a sustainable living unit in iron-cement, the “Full Fill Home”, access to which is via three steps covered with 3mm-thick ceramic slabs, the same ones also used for the 4 benches provided for visitors.

Anupama Kundoo has a profound knowledge of the ceramic material, which she has studied in depth. She has chosen Laminam slabs for her installation because she was impressed with their innovative technology, large size, minimum thickness and perfect planarity. The Calce collection in particular, thanks to the cement effect, has given the installation exactly the tone and sensation the Architect sought to recreate.

I NATURALI PIETRE COLLECTION FOR THE NEW BUILDINGS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

In virtue of their perfect planarity, extreme lightness and excellent mechanical properties, LAMINAM large-size ceramic slabs with minimum thickness are the perfect product in the interiors, as wall cladding and flooring in residential and public contexts.

The main characteristics and great value of the LAMINAM material, like hygiene, easy cleaning, heat resistance, wear-and scratch-proof, inalterable slab colour over time, blend with the creative energy and sophisticated language that marks all of LAMINAM’s production.

With over 100 surfaces in the catalogue, the LAMINAM collection, with its ultra-modern, industrial, three-dimensional textures, has developed into an attractive palette renewed every year to satisfy growing demand from the market.

Among the latest reference of the company, particularly interesting are the internal coverings of the new buildings of the University of Sydney Business School signed by Woods Bagot, a world-leading architectural firm with a team of over 800 professionals in the different offices in Australia, Asia, Middle East, Europe and North America.

The vision for the University complex is to create a global, 21st century business Learning environment that fosters productive interactions with the business community, responding to the needs of current and future tertiary students in a compelling model of cutting edge management education.

To this end, Woods Bagot has designed an architectural solution in the form of a series of boxes clustered around social, collaborative "glue" spaces.

For the flooring of the University buildings has been chosen the collection I Naturali Pietre in the finishing Pietra di Savoia Grigia, size 1000x3000mm thickness 5.6 mm that faithfully reproduces the technical essence and aesthetics of the material from which it draws inspiration, revealing textures with high technological value. Its smooth and surprisingly structured surfaces create a strong effect of coherence and continuity merging the spaces between them and thus strengthening the sense of togetherness and sharing that informs the entire project. The sunlight that reaches the spaces through the large windows and the building's central skylight is reflected on the floor giving a sense of great luminosity and emphasizing the natural effect of the ceramic surfaces.

Laminam presence is completed by the supply of Collection and Tredi surfaces used as walls and stairs coverings, revealing the multiple possibilities of application of LAMINAM slab.

THE LAMINAM STAR MAKER SLAB DESIGNED BY MAC STOPA WINS THE RED DOT AWARD 2016

The prestigious international Red Dot Award, called the Oscars of Design, which annually establishes the best design projects, was awarded this year to the polish designer and architect Mac Stopa for the category Product Design 2016. During the gala night of July 4 at the Aalto -Theater in Essen, the Star Maker slab developed in collaboration with Laminam Poland has received the highest award, the "Red Dot: Best of the Best".

Mac Stopa, world-renowned for his modern, innovative and unconventional interiors, founder, architect and main designer of Massive Design studio, has chosen to combine his creativity to the incredible technologies of Laminam, the leading Italian company in the production of large size and minimum thickness ceramic slabs for architecture and interiors.
Produced in the 1000x3000mm size with 5 mm thickness, the futuristic Laminam Star Maker slabs are characterized by a geometric pattern of small pentagonal stars, a graphic structure that allows to create multiple layout simply by rotating the slabs of 90 degrees in a series of different combinations. The slabs create a sort of three-dimensional puzzle, a mosaic of small elements that can be applied both on interior and exterior surfaces, such as the modern offices complex Warsaw Spire.

With over 100 surfaces in the catalogue, LAMINAM offers a wide range of aesthetic possibility for all the flavors and styles: natural soft colors which respond to the trend of material research of design for classic and intimate atmospheres, or ultramodern industrial and three-dimensional textures, to draw futuristic sceneries characterized by a strong personality, such as the one that characterize Star Maker project.

Laminam presents World Atlas Book at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale Di Venezia

LAMINAM, specialist in the production of large-size ceramic slabs with minimum thickness for exteriors and interiors, proves its strong bond with the world of Architecture by taking part, as a Supporter, in the 15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, chosen for the affinity to the theme developed by its Curator Alejandro Aravena.

On this occasion the company presents the editorial project World Atlas Book, a limited edition architecture volume containing the most exciting images of LAMINAM references around the world, as a journey to discover cultures and artistic spirits. For over a year photographer Andrea Garuti travelled the five continents to create a photo feature combining architecture, reality and travel report, gently immortalising real-life scenes with powerful chromatic shades and tiptoeing along the path of respect for other peoples and cultures, expressing through images and life stories the conquering spirit and the journey towards new horizons, typical of architectural innovation and essence of LAMINAM’s activity.

Its brief history has not hindered LAMINAM from accumulating an impressive series of international references and the company has participated in the ex*****on of important architectonic projects: innovation, cutting-edge technology and creative personality make LAMINAM’s heart beat all over the world, with its public and private buildings from the centre of Tokyo to the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico, from the School of Moscow to Fluxmans Building in South Africa, from Panmure Station in New Zealand to Bloor East in Toronto.

The book is unveiled during the round table “The Planet on the Surface” promoted by LAMINAM on May 26 at 4 pm in the Biennale’s Library, in the historic Central Pavillon at the Giardini venue. The event is an invitation to ideally fly over the world and glide on materials and methods, boundaries and creative utopias. The author and film director Raffaello Fusaro introduces and moderates some influential voices from the world of contemporary architecture that will debate on the theme, such as the architects Gianluca Peluffo, 5+1AA Alfonso Femia Gianluca Peluffo (Genova-Milan, Italy), Anupama Kundoo, Anupama Kundoo Architects (Auroville, India / Madrid, Spain) Zhang Ke, ZAO / Standardarchitecture (Beijing, China) e Humberto Campana, Estudio Campana (São Paulo, Brasil), with the special presence of Prof. Giuliana Bruno, Department of Visual and Environmental Studies, Harvard University (USA).

The participation of LAMINAM at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia also takes a concrete form by supplying Calce Tortora slabs for Indian architect Anupama Kundoo’s "Building Knowlegde: An inventory of strategies" at the Arsenale. This installation investigates the processing of knowledge behind the act of building discussing the dualities to be integrated rather than battled with. LAMINAM surfaces create the physical landscape displaying the inventory of her most innovative projects: on one hand, 40 plinths covered with 3+mm thick slabs show the 'fruits' of the investigations (as 1:50 sectional models) and on the other, 6 tables with 12mm thick tops display the 'roots' of research and experimentation (the 1:5 scale tectonic models alongside actual material samples that distinguish the architectural vocabulary of the designer). The central piece is a full-scale construction of an affordable ferrocement housing unit. To enter the 'Full Fill Home', that demonstrates her current architectural work in process, three steps have been covered with 3+mm thick slabs, the same used for the 4 benches at the service of the visitors.
