CALL FOR AUDITIONS!
Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June between 2pm and 5pm at The Junction, Alserkal Avenue
H72 Productions is auditioning for its September production of The Ladykillers, a black comedy set in 1950s London, directed by Sarah Potter.
Mrs Wilberforce, a sweet little old lady, alone in her house in a King’s Cross backstreet with only a parrot for company, unwittingly rents her spare room to a gang of bank robbers, posing as amateur musicians, led by criminal mastermind Professor Marcus. As the heist goes awry and Mrs Wilberforce uncovers the truth, Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. It’s one old lady and a parrot versus 5 ruthless hoodlums…
Auditions for 8 speaking roles [6 principals, 2 minor]; 3 male, 2 female, 3 could be either. Ages stated are indicative of how old the character should look, not how old the actor has to be.
MRS LOUISA WILBERFORCE [Female] – Mid-70s. Grey haired, short-sighted; kindly, but can be strict if people don’t live up to her version of Victorian values and propriety. Continuously reporting non-crimes to the police. Terrible judge of character.
PROFESSOR MARCUS [Male] – Over 40. Highly intelligent, well-spoken, genius at planning and executing major heists, and picking the right people to do the dirty work.
MAJOR COURTNEY [Male] – Mid-60s. Military bearing, posh, old-fashioned English way of speaking. Experienced con-artist, been with the Professor on several ventures, but getting nervous and less sure of his abilities in his old age
HARRY ROBINSON [Female or Male] – Under 40. Been thieving since before they could walk, it comes naturally to them. Not very bright, but a team player.
LOUIS(E) HARVEY [Female or Male] – Under 40. Hard-nosed criminal with no heart, but an inexplicable fear of old ladies. Happy to knife anyone for money. English is not their first language. Says Romanian in the script, but any accent will do.
ONE ROUND [Male] – Over 30. Ex-boxer, years of getting hit have taken their toll, so he’s a little slow on the uptake, and is easily amused. He is still powerfully built and can hurt people, although he’s not vicious or unkind.
CONSTABLE MACDONALD [Female or Male] – Under 30. Ambitious but inexperienced officer. Dying to get involved in something more exciting than lost cats, but is kind and patient with Mrs Wilberforce.
MRS JANE TROMLEYTON [Female] – Over 50. Chairwoman of the St Pancras Senior Women’s Guild. Thinks she is the arbiter of good taste amongst the elderly ladies of north London.
We’ll be doing readings from the script, but please feel free to do a monologue first if you feel more comfortable, especially if you are new to the Dubai stage.
