Burkina Faso has been added to an international watchlist of countries where civic freedoms are considered to be deteriorating, amid growing concerns over alleged crackdowns on political opposition, civil society organisations and government critics.

In its report, the rights group CIVICUS said authorities have dissolved more than 1,100 civil society organisations, disbanded all political parties and intensified arrests, censorship and enforced disappearances targeting government critics. The organisation said the developments have significantly narrowed civic space in the country.

The military government has defended many of its actions as necessary to safeguard national security and maintain public order as Burkina Faso continues to battle a persistent jihadist insurgency.

Burkina Faso Launches 605-Hectare Irrigation Project to Boost Agriculture.

🇧🇫🌱 Burkina Faso has launched a 605-hectare irrigation project worth more than 9 billion CFA francs, marking another major investment in the country's agricultural sector.

Fully financed by the government, the project is expected to:

🌾 Support year-round farming
🥕 Increase food production
💼 Create employment opportunities
🌍 Strengthen national food security

Officials say the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve agricultural productivity, support farmers, and promote sustainable rural development.

The project reflects Burkina Faso's continued focus on investing in agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and community development.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: “There is only ONE Captain on this ship!” – Burkina Faso’s Ibrahim Traoré Warns Internal Rivals 🇧🇫🔥

Burkina Faso’s interim president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has issued a stern warning, stating he will uncompromisingly eliminate any internal threats challenging his leadership or the country's trajectory.

This declaration follows weeks of intense rumors and reported disappearances of key figures within the military junta, raising questions about potential internal power struggles.

Addressing the situation, Captain Traoré clearly defined his stance:

📌 "There is only ONE Captain in this country," emphasizing that his authority remains absolute.

📌 "Those who work with me know my standard. If anyone slips up, I will drop them without a second thought," he asserted.

This warning comes amid the prolonged absence of influential figures like Oumarou Yabrė (head of intelligence) from the public eye, sparking speculation of rising tensions among the military leadership.

Having come to power in a September 2022 coup, the 38-year-old leader has reportedly foiled multiple coup attempts. Analysts view this latest statement as a strategic move to crush internal dissent and consolidate his grip on power.

📌 Political Shifts in West Africa & The New Course of the Sahel Region

The political and security dynamics unfolding in West Africa and the Sahel are significantly reshaping the continent's geopolitical balance.

Decisions made by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have particularly drawn global and continental attention:

🔹 Formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES): Departing from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the three nations launched a new political and military coalition—the Alliance of Sahel States (Alliance des États du Sahel). This union includes a collective defense agreement where an attack on one is considered an attack on all.

🔹 Withdrawal of Foreign Forces & New Alliances: Moving away from traditional military cooperation with Western powers like France, these countries are forging new security and defense partnerships, notably with Russia and other global players.

🔹 ECOWAS Tensions & Regional Challenges: Despite sanctions and diplomatic standoffs, the departure of these nations poses major challenges to regional integration, free movement, and joint counter-terrorism efforts—even as the threat of armed militant groups in the Sahel persists.

How do you see this new chapter in West Africa influencing sovereignty and regional integration across the continent?
