Installation - Painted Metal,
Dated 2019-2020
by
JAMAL HABROUSH AL SUWAIDI.

An installation by Emirati artist Jamal Habroush Al Suwaidi sees him depict one of the world’s best-known symbols of hospitality and welcoming gestures of friendship — the coffee bean. Taking the form of a multi-coloured, large-scale installation, “The Coffee Beans” features seven metal components, each varying in shape, size and shade. Devoid of decorative or dynamic flourishes, its geometric simplicity gives the overall work a distinctive appearance, while ensuring that each separate piece is immediately identifiable. The decision to create seven beans is a nod to coffee’s recognition across the globe as an essential part of social occasions and as a universal sign of friendship.

JAMAL HABROOSH AL SUWAIDI

Martyr's Helmet marks UAE's Commemoration Day.

Iconic work by Jamal Habroush Al Suwaidi is a fitting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The approaching commemoration day provides timely opportunity to highlight a very special piece of work by the Emirati artist Jamal Habroush Al Suwaidi, which was created to mark the first Martyr’s Day in the United Arab Emirates, held on November 30, 2015 in Abu-Dhabi.

Titled ‘Martyr’s Helmet’ and created in stainless steel, the work is reminiscent of traditional, military-style headwear.

Now one of the most important dates in the UAE’s calendar, Martyr’s Day was decreed a public holiday by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, May God have mercy on him, to pay tribute to the Emiratis who have given their life in the line of duty, either at home or abroad, in military, humanitarian or civil service.

Al Suwaidi’s iconic work was the first made by an Emirati artist to mark Martyr’s Day and was exhibited as part of the inaugural programme of events in 2015. Created in a series of delicately curved lines which remind us of the artist’s passion for bringing calligraphy into his work, the helmet is evidently meticulously researched and immediately recognisable in shape. The piece is finished in stainless steel on a granite base.

Al Suwaidi said that while Commemoration Day is a national holiday, he wanted to ensure that like the dignified events held to mark it, the Martyr’s Helmet reflected the gravitas of the occasion and the sacrifices those being honoured had made.

“A helmet is symbolic in so many ways, providing protection in just the same way that our martyrs did when they laid down their lives for their country and its people,” he said.

“This work is a lasting legacy to both the people that lost their lives while serving their country and also the occasion of Martyr’s Day itself, which in just seven years has quite rightly become an important part of our heritage, ensuring that those who have been martyred will always be remembered.”

“ANTIBIOTIC” - bronze and Stainless Steel, from an edition of 5, dated 2017 by JAMAL HABROUSH
AL SUWAIDI.

Al Suwaidi's work exploring whether treating patients and making profits can ever be reconciled is a brilliant, bitter pill to swallow.

The work by the Emirati artist Jamal Habroush Al Suwaidi explores the complex and at times conflicting roles that antibiotics play by providing crucial treatment for the sick, while delivering huge rewards to the powerful drug manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.

In this, topical work, Al Suwaidi takes as his starting point the notion that though antibiotics are an essential, life-saving component of modern medicine and healthcare for millions they also represent a highly valuable commodity for major industry manufacturers and distributors, often described as Big Pharma.

It was back in 1928 that Alexander Fleming, based at St Mary’s Hospital in London, stumbled across penicillin, the first true antibiotic. The discovery was made when Fleming returned to his lab from vacation and discovered that mold which had developed on an accidentally contaminated staphylococcus culture plate was preventing the growth of the bacteria.

More than 90 years on, penicillin remains the most widely used antibiotic in the world, alongside other powerful drugs that have been found to effectively treat diseases caused by bacteria. However, running parallel to these life-changing scientific innovations, a highly powerful with several pharmaceutical corporations routinely securing a position on the Fortune 500 list. The world market for pharmaceuticals stood at USD 1.2 trillion in 2018, according to a Global Use of Medicines report from the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science, with forecasts suggesting that spending could reach USD 1.5 trillion by 2023.

This theme of whether it’s possible to reconcile meeting patients’ needs with making a huge profit lies at the heart of Al Suwaidi’s creation...
