DUBAI URBAN ELEMENTS CHALLENGE
Shortlisted Project: Desert Bloom
Designed by: .arch
Organized by: and
The Desert Bloom is inspired by how life adapts and thrives in the harsh desert; particularly drawing from the Ghaf tree, Dubai’s national tree, known for resilience, shade and historic symbolism. The design of Desert Bloom merges the organic beauty of the desert flora, Islamic sacred geometric patterns, and modular adaptable growth – just like a blooming plant in the desert.
Desert Bloom consists of four key elements in its aim to address the challenges and needs of urban elements in Dubai: The Canopy Bloom, Petal Pods, Oasis Nook and the Falcon Path. These elements combine into one system.
The inspiration behind the four key elements delved into the divine natural forms and its essence for a contemporary interpretation of it through sacred geometry. The Canopy Bloom was inspired by the date palm, with its tall mast and palm leaves providing shade to the ground below. The desert flower provides the form for the perfect seating arrangement in the form of its petals, which spread out from the centre and fan outward. The Saker Falcon, symbolising freedom and ferocity, inspired the design for the Falcon Bridge, a pedestrian and cycling bridge that grants freedom to walk over highways, streets and public spaces to allow ease of movement throughout Dubai. Lastly, the sacred geometry forms the basis of The Oasis Nook, a vending kiosk that can accommodate shops and food chains, encased in an Arabic arch and shaded with mashrabiya to animated the outside.
