In the early 1960s, Yervant Hawarian began his artistic career at just fifteen as a cinema affiche painter, creating monumental, hand painted film posters for major theatres across Lebanon. Since the early 2000s, Hawarian has developed a deeply self reflective fine art practice, revisiting the golden era of Arab and international cinema through large scale paintings.

His work occupies a unique space at the intersection of cinema, portraiture, religious iconography, and vernacular graphic culture, transforming collective memories of the silver screen into powerful contemporary images.

We are pleased to announce Artbooth Gallery’s debut participation in KIAF SEOUL 2026, presenting the work of four remarkable artists: Lee Young A, Moon-E, Richard Hearns, and Soraya Abu Naba’a.

Together, their practices explore how personal and collective experiences are translated into visual form. Moving between landscape and abstraction, figure and gesture, material and memory, the presentation creates a cross cultural dialogue spanning the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Korea.

ON VIEW | IN TRANSIT

The powerful figurative works of internationally recognized Syrian, Kurdish painter Bahram Hajou, educated in Germany under Norbert Tadeusz, use the expressive lines of German Expressionism to probe the psychological depths of solitude and human connection. This emotional gravity finds a visceral, structural parallel in the abstract, materially experimental canvases of Lebanese artist Hanibal Srouji. Drawing directly from his experience during the Lebanese Civil War, Srouji uses a blowtorch to burn, cut, and puncture his surfaces, turning the canvas into a scarred urban landscape that echoes the architectural trauma of Beirut while balancing a delicate tension between destruction and renewal.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — Barham Hajou

A cornerstone of contemporary Middle Eastern art, Barham Hajou’s powerful figurative canvases serve as psychological mirrors of the human condition. His practice has earned international recognition, with works held in prestigious public and institutional collections, including the British Museum (London), Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah), the Atassi Foundation (Dubai), the Dalloul Art Foundation (Beirut), and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (Amman).

Awarded the prestigious Henri Matisse Prize in France, Barham stands in the lineage of German Expressionism as a master student of Norbert Tadeusz at the renowned Kunstakademie Düsseldorf/Münster. Bridging two artistic worlds, his signature style characterized by muted, earthy hues punctuated by unexpected bursts of color explores deeply intimate themes of isolation, love, vulnerability, and spatial displacement.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – Yervant Hawarian

A pioneering figure in the history of hand painted cinema posters in the Middle East, Yervant Hawarian began his artistic journey at just 15, creating monumental film posters for Lebanon's iconic cinemas.

Beyond the silver screen, he became the unofficial portraitist for five consecutive Lebanese presidents and produced large scale public murals, religious commissions, and portraits of renowned Arab cultural figures.

Since the early 2000s, Hawarian has transitioned into a self-reflective fine art practice. His recent exhibitions include Hope in an Age of Dystopia (2024) at the Ramzi and Saeda Dalloul Art Foundation, For the Children of Gaza (2024) at Msheireb Museums, Doha, and Divas: From Oum Koulthoum to Dalida (2025) at the Sursock Museum, Beirut.
