WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
Timeless, handmade quality Baskets & Ornaments that tell a story, bring a natural & earthy feel, and add warmth & charm to your home - everything we sell has one goal in mind: to make your home feel more welcoming & comfortable! We are Florence and Leon, a mother-son duo, deeply passionate about the artistry of the human hand and the stories that each creation carries. Our journey
to bring African artistry to homes around the world began in 1997 with Florence driven by her passion, eventually partnering with my son Leon. We recognized that these baskets were more than just decorative items; they were a testament to a rich cultural heritage and a life-sustaining source of livelihood for the artisans. We felt a profound call to action – to bridge the gap between these extraordinary artists and the wider world who would treasure their work. So, we founded Makuru, not just as a marketplace for beautiful handmade baskets, but as a platform to empower these talented artisans. Every basket you purchase brings sustainable income to the creators, their families, and their communities. As you enjoy these exquisite pieces in your home, know that you are part of a story of empowerment, resilience, and shared prosperity. You are not just decorating your space; you are weaving a brighter future for a community across the globe. Over the years, many homes and spaces have been adorned with Makuru baskets and handicrafts. MAKURU is a Shona word meaning “Great & Hard To Miss!”
Today the MAKURU family is made up of artisans who all work to not just deliver quality, unique baskets & products for your homes but products that positively impact hundreds of families through consistent fair trade and also uses sustainable raw materials- change begins with me! Sure, we can follow trends & fads, but they pass and we believe they lead to overconsumption and waste. A Makuru product lasts a lifetime! Makuru’s handmade baskets and products sell in 11 countries globally and counting. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Together, we can make a difference, one basket at a time. With gratitude,
Florence & Leon
