Silas Mazipetela the man behind the deaths of 13 people along the Bulawayo-Harare Highway specifically just after Sebakwe River sometime in June 2025 was sentenced to an effective 18months in prison for negligent e driving and culpable homicide by the Kwekwe Magistates Court on the 11th of March 2026 after a long trial as he has pleaded not guilty to the charge since last year.The brief circumstances of the matter are that the offender was driving a fuel tanker enroute Harare when he lost control of the heavy weight truck with two tankers loaded with over 2000liters of diesel and landed on top of a Nissan AD Van which had over 10 people aboard. All the passengers who were in the AD Van died on spot after emergency services reacted to the accident over 30 minutes after after as people from local feared that the tanker would cause an inferno. According to an eye witness who was near the scene reported that there were loud noises of people crying for help but nothing much that he could do as fuel was already spilling in the tarred road with the tanker trapping people in the small motor vehicle. Provincial Magistrate M Matuvi in passing her sentence to the offender took into consideration that the offender Silas Mazipetela was not a first time offender as he was once charged with culpable homicide sometime in the year 2000 involving a a road traffic accident where he was also involved as well as the number of lives lost in the Road Traffic accident. The justice system continues to warn the public and motorists of the wrath of the Law where loss of lives is involved and that it does not condone negligent driving at all.In this case more than 10 people lost their lives. The public hailed the court for delivering justice as this serves to warn would be offenders that the law will take its course to punish drivers who do not have respect for passengers' safety. On top of the 18 months imprisonment the court also canceled the offender's driver's licence prohibiting him from driving for the rest of his life.
