BREAKING: Hwange businessman wins US$500 000 defamation case
Hwange businessman Bruno Fungayi Takawira has won a major defamation battle after the High Court ordered Hwange Coal Gasification Company and Feng Guo to pay him US$500 000 in damages.
The case followed allegations published in a company letter accusing Takawira of being linked to the theft, sale and smuggling of about 1 400 tonnes of coke.
Justice Tawanda Chitapi ruled that the allegations damaged Takawira’s reputation, portraying him as a thief and smuggler without proper verification of the claims.
The court also ordered the defendants to pay the damages jointly, together with interest and legal costs, after they failed to defend the case.
The ruling marks a significant victory for Takawira, who said his reputation as a businessman had been unfairly affected by the allegations.
