Joining the chorus of voices across the globe and within the art world, we express our profound sorrow at the passing of Koyo Kouoh, the visionary Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Zeitz MOCAA.

Her transformative leadership and unwavering commitment to contemporary African art will leave an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues at the Zeitz MOCAA , and all those whose lives were touched by her remarkable vision and passion.

Performance title: Ancestral Ground by Nothando Chiwas at the Cheuka Harare Art Fair

In a stitched dress, she interacts with the earth…with mud, kneeling, pressing her hands into the soil…creating patterns on fabric. The mud is a symbol of a deep state connection to heritage and memory….
As she lathers soil on her body…it is a lamentation of the suffering that the land goes through…
She brings to focus the need to revere the land and our connection to it
