Celebrating the Life of Former Band Member Chipi Chipindirwe

Today, the Zimbabwe Territorial Band pays tribute to its former member, Chipi Chipindirwe, who has been promoted to Glory. Chipi’s extraordinary journey in Salvation Army music ministry leaves behind a legacy of service, excellence, leadership, and unwavering passion for music.

Chipi joined the Chitungwiza Citadel Band horn section in 1999, beginning a musical and spiritual journey that would span decades. In 2006, he joined the Zimbabwe Territorial Band on horn, where his talent, discipline, and commitment became a blessing to many.

Throughout his years of service, Chipi played with and trained bands across the Territory, including Bindura, Gweru Citadel under the leadership of Bandmaster Charles Meki, and Mutare. His love for teaching and developing musicians was evident wherever he served. In 2015, he led the Harare Eastern Divisional Band to a commendable 3rd place finish at the Territorial Competitions held at ZANU PF Hall.

He later moved to Botswana District, where he became actively involved with the Gaborone Central Band and conducted the Botswana District Band that emerged winners of the 2022 Territorial Competitions in Category B.

Even during seasons when he worshipped outside The Salvation Army at Bible Life Ministries, Chipi maintained strong ties with Salvation Army music ministry, continuing to train and mentor musicians at Gaborone Central Corps. In the past two years, he had begun gravitating back toward active fellowship within The Salvation Army.

Beyond Salvation Army ministry, Chipi was a founder member of the Gaborone Community Orchestra in 2023 and worked tirelessly to strengthen its brass section with Salvation Army players.

At the time of his promotion to Glory, he was serving as Assistant Conductor of the orchestra, which continues to gain recognition within Gaborone and national music circles.

Academically, Chipi was equally accomplished. He lectured in Procurement and Logistics at the International School of Business Sciences in Gaborone. He held a BSc in Procurement and Logistics from Bindura University and a Master’s degree from CUT. Musically, he attained Grade 7 ABRSM Music Theory and Grade 7 Trumpet through Trinity College, remaining a proficient trumpeter until his passing.

Last year, together with a small brass ensemble, he accompanied the Maikano Serenaders Community Choir to the Tiro Mpane Regional Choir Competitions in Sun City, South Africa.
Despite all the milestones, travels, achievements, and stages he graced, Chipi always treasured the simple but powerful moments of Sunday morning corps ministry — where music became worship and ministry touched hearts directly.

More than the notes he played, it is the man he was that leaves the greatest testimony: humble, faithful, dependable, and deeply committed to God’s work through music ministry. His leadership, friendship, mentorship, and servant-hearted spirit impacted countless lives across Zimbabwe, Botswana, and beyond.

Chipi, thank you for the music, the ministry, the laughter, the leadership, and the faith you lived out in every season.

Our prayers are with the Chipindirwe family, Gaborone Central Corps, members he served alongside in the Zimbabwe Territorial Band, and the wider Salvation Army music fraternity.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Appointment of Captain Raymond Chiyepa as Assistant Executive Officer for the Zimbabwe Territorial Band

The Territory is pleased to announce the appointment of Captain Raymond Chiyepa as Assistant Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe
Territorial Band (ZTB). Captain Chiyepa was born in Harare on 6 August 1986 and was raised in a Salvation Army family. He was
dedicated to Christ just two weeks after his birth, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith and service within The
Salvation Army.

His involvement in Salvation Army music began at an early age when he joined the Young People’s Band at Harare Citadel in 1992 under the leadership of Farai Young Mutuma, the then Young People’s Band Leader. Although he was initially encouraged to play the Baritone or Euphonium, Raymond was determined to play the Eb Bass, the largest instrument in the band. His determination paid off, and what began as a childhood preference has grown into a lifelong passion for brass banding.

In 1999, he joined the Harare Citadel Band, where he continued to develop his musical abilities and deepen his commitment to Salvation Army music ministry. In August 2000, he was enrolled as a Senior Soldier, affirming his commitment to Christian service. Captain Chiyepa became one of the pioneer members of the Zimbabwe Territorial Band in 2004 and has remained a faithful and active bandsman ever since. Over the years he has participated in numerous territorial and regional music camps. In 2009, he attended the Peterhouse Music Camp alongside Blessing Mwoyosvi, Rutendo Pote, and Addington Mutandadzi. The camp was led by Norwegian brass tutor, providing valuable international
musical exposure and training.

He also participated in ZimProject 2005 at Chikankata, which brought together delegates from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Canada, and benefited from regional music camps facilitated by visiting Swiss music teams. Through his dedication to musical development, he attained Level 7 in Music.

Responding to God’s call to full-time ministry, Raymond entered the Officer Training College of The Salvation Army in 2010 as part of the Ambassadors of Holiness Session (2010–2011). During his
training, he served as Bandmaster of the Cadets’ Band, where he actively encouraged and recruited fellow cadets to participate in the band. Among those he trained was his wife, Captain Knowledge
Chiyepa, whom he taught to play the Cornet, and who became a member of the Cadets’ Band.

He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in September 2011, promoted to Captain in September 2016, and is due for promotion to Major in September 2026. Throughout his officership, Captain Chiyepa has served faithfully in several appointments across the Territory, including Chigiji Corps, Triangle Corps, Chinyani Corps, Masiye Camp, Raffingora Corps, and Marikopo Primary School, where he currently serves as Bursar. Alongside his ministry responsibilities, he has pursued academic advancement and has completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours Degree in Development Studies with Zimbabwe Open University and is currently awaiting graduation.

Captain Chiyepa continues to be actively involved in Salvation Army music ministry. He currently serves as Band Leader for the Officers’ Band, commonly known as the Zimbabwe Officers’ Band, which
ministers at officers’ gatherings. The most recent music ministry undertaken by the band was during the Officers’ Councils held at Howard High School. Captain Chiyepa is married to Captain Knowledge Chiyepa, his session mate from the Ambassadors of Holiness Session. They are blessed with a son, Ross Ropafadzo Chiyepa, born on 30 October 2023. A passionate Eb Bass player, Captain Chiyepa remains deeply committed to Salvation Army banding and music ministry. In addition to his new territorial responsibility, he also serves at the divisional level as Executive Officer for the Harare Eastern Divisional Band and the Harare Eastern Divisional Young People’s Band.

As he assumes his responsibilities as Assistant Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Territorial Band, we pray that God will continue to guide and strengthen him in this ministry. We congratulate Captain
Chiyepa on this appointment and assure him of our prayers and support as he continues to contribute to the musical and spiritual witness of The Salvation Army.

The Zimbabwe Territory is pleased to announce the appointment of Major Vitalis Chimukwanda as the Executive Officer for the Zimbabwe Territorial Band.

mission of The Salvation Army. His appointment reflects not only his proven administrative and pastoral leadership but also his passion for the Ministry of music and the role that Salvation Army banding plays in worship, evangelism, and spiritual formation.

Major Chimukwanda was born on 15 June 1978 at Howard Hospital and grew up in the rural areas of Chiweshe. His early education began at Kanhukamwe Primary School before he transferred to Mhizha Primary School in Highfield, where he completed his primary education. He later attended Mukai High School in Highfield for his secondary education.

His journey of Christian service began at Highfield Temple, where he became a Senior Soldier in The Salvation Army. Deputy Bandmaster Vivian Brian Makanjera

The Band is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Vivian Brian Makanjera as Deputy.

Bandmaster. Makanjera currently serves as Bandmaster and Worship Leader at Norton Corps in Harare West Division, where he continues to faithfully contribute to the music and worship life of the corps.

Vivian’s musical journey began in Mabvuku Corps, where he grew up and developed a deep passion for brass band music. His inspiration to learn a brass instrument can be traced back to the 1995 Territorial Congress at Nyamande in Domboshava, where he was greatly inspired after hearing Dzivarasekwa Citadel’s former trombone player, Bandsman Shepherd Tembo.

The following year, he began his formal musical development under the guidance of his sister, Sister Daphne John, a tenor horn
player who introduced him to the fundamentals of brass playing, beginning with the C Major scale. At that time, the band at
Mabvuku Corps was under the leadership of Captain Christopher Pamacheche.

During his early years of development, several dedicated bandsmen played an important role in nurturing his musical ability. Bandsman Brighton Ndaradzi, an accomplished trumpet player, provided
him with the Rudiments of Music Theory book, which greatly strengthened his understanding of music theory and guided him in developing proper trumpet embouchure. Bandsman Ngoni Mutsiru, who was then the bass trombone player at Mabvuku Corps, also assisted him in learning the fundamentals of trombone playing.
His commitment and passion for brass music continued to grow despite limited resources. At one point he was given a damaged cornet with a broken lead pipe by senior bandsmen. Determined to
continue learning, he repaired the instrument himself. Around the same time, a school friend informed him that they had a trumpet at home which was not being used. What he initially thought was a toy turned out to be a brand-new trumpet in its case, which later became an important instrument in refining his skills and strengthening his musical development.

From these humble beginnings, Bandmaster Vivian played a significant role in nurturing young brass players at Mabvuku Corps, helping to develop a strong musical culture that produced several
outstanding musicians who later served in both the Territorial Band and the Air Force Band. Among these are the Mudyiwa brothers (Kelvin and David), the Makanjera brothers (Tawanda, Marvin and
Tinashe), Musarara brothers (Malvern and Edward) and Territorial Youth Band Leader Reggis Mafunga.

Brother Vivian has also contributed to the wider music ministry of the Territory through his service as a faculty member at Territorial Music Camps, where he taught Level 4 & 5 Music Theory, helping to equip young Salvationist musicians with strong theoretical foundations. He currently serves on the Song Book Council, which is working on the development of new Shona, Tonga, and Ndebele
Songbooks for the Territory. In addition, he has previously served as Bands Brigade Sergeant, providing leadership and mentorship within the band.

Through his appointment as Deputy Bandmaster, Vivian brings valuable experience in band leadership, music education, and territorial music ministry. His dedication to nurturing young
musicians, strengthening musical standards, and supporting the spiritual mission of the Band will be a great asset in this role.

The Band congratulates Deputy Bandmaster Vivian on this appointment and assures him of our prayers and support as he undertakes this responsibility in service to God. “Sing unto the Lord a new song.” May God’s blessings and favour continue to guide him in his ministry through music.

Appointment of Addington Mutandadzi as Territorial Bandmaster

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Addington Mutandadzi as Territorial Bandmaster, a role that carries significant responsibility in guiding, strengthening, and developing the music
ministry across the Territory. Addington’s journey as a Salvationist began at an early age while attending Chiedza Primary School,
where he was introduced to the fellowship of The Salvation Army at Harare Citadel Corps.

Growing up within the life and ministry of the Corps, he developed a deep appreciation for Salvation Army worship and a strong
commitment to its music ministry.

His musical journey began in his early secondary school years, when he started learning to play the trombone under the guidance of Bandmaster Lawrence Nyakudya, who at the time served as Deputy Bandmaster to Bandmaster Anderson Bakacheza. Through their mentorship and encouragement, Addington developed a solid musical foundation and a lasting appreciation for the ministry of Salvation Army banding.

Over the years, Addington has served faithfully in several bands within the Territory. Since 2004, he has been an active member of both the Greater Harare Divisional Band and the Territorial Band, contributing significantly to The Salvation Army's musical life and outreach ministry.

His dedication and leadership later led to his appointment as Bandmaster at Harare Citadel Corps, where he played an important role in nurturing musicians and strengthening the band’s ministry within the Corps and surrounding community.

Addington also brings valuable professional musical experience. In 1997, he was attested into the Zimbabwe Republic Police and, after completing his initial training, was posted to the ZRP Band. During his twelve years of service, he gained extensive experience in ensemble performance, musical discipline, and professional band leadership.

Through his involvement in Salvation Army music ministry, Addington has also had opportunities to participate in several international ministry tours. These include performances in Atlanta at Georgia State University with the Territorial Songsters, as well as visits to the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, Switzerland, South Africa, Kenya, and Botswana. These experiences have allowed him to share in the global fellowship and ministry of Salvation Army music.

Following his service with the police band, Addington joined Watershed College in 2009, where he has continued to contribute to music education and the development of young musicians.
In 2013, he transferred from Harare Citadel Corps to Marondera Corps, where he served as Bandmaster while also fulfilling the role of Deputy Bandmaster of the Harare Eastern Divisional
Band. In these roles, he demonstrated strong leadership, a commitment to musical excellence, and a passion for mentoring younger musicians.

Academically, Addington holds a Bachelor of Music Degree and a Diploma in Teaching, along with Grade 8 certificates in several brass instruments. His musical ability extends beyond brass instruments, as he is also a skilled saxophonist, reflecting both versatility and broad musical training.

Addington brings to this appointment not only considerable musical expertise, but also a deep understanding of the spiritual and devotional role of Salvation Army music. His leadership reflects a commitment to ensuring that music continues to serve as a powerful means of worship, witness, and encouragement within the life and mission of The Salvation Army.

Addington is supported in both his Christian life and musical ministry by his family. Together with his wife and their three children, they continue to play an important and supportive role in his service and commitment to the work of the Lord through The Salvation Army.

As he assumes his responsibilities as Territorial Bandmaster, we pray that God will guide and strengthen him as he leads the Territory’s music ministry, inspiring Salvation Army musicians to serve with excellence, humility, and a heart for mission.

We congratulate Addington on this appointment and assure him of our prayers and support as he undertakes this important ministry.
