GudoGuru’s debut album was recorded in October of 2015 @ Media Matrix Studios in Harare by Wonder Pinchisi & Bothwell Nyamhondera. Additional Overdubs were added in November & December of the same year with Pikirayi Mangindi @ MFD Studios Harare. The album is a culmination of nearly 6 years of composition, rehearsal and refinement that began with Tanganyika (the record’s primary writer/composer & vocalist) returning to Zimbabwe after several years spent travelling abroad. Building on a renewed appreciation of the cultural tools available within his own heritage, an initial draft of the songs that ultimately comprise was recorded over the course of several home-studio sessions circa September 2009 - with the Mbira emerging a focal voice to this sensibility. The resultant recording “Magamba/Rumours of War” though never released, forms the backbone around which a GudoGuru lineup subsequently re-grouped in late 2012. Rehearsing from a home-base in Harare, the band’s lineup eventually distilled to its current incarnation around the beginning of 2014, adding elements drawn from Zimbabwe’s rich yet unsung drum cultures. is thus their attempt to capture the spirit & sound they’ve developed & built since then.
