One of the biggest hurdles in arts education within the national curriculum is bridging the gap between theory and practice. While government has taken important strides to include arts education across primary, secondary and tertiary levels, partnerships between academic institutions and arts organisations like Amakhosi Cultural Centre play a critical role in bringing that learning to life.

By hosting school groups such as Maphisa Primary School, who travelled all the way from rural Matabeleland South, we help ensure that learners experience the arts beyond the classroom. Through hands-on engagement, we create opportunities for students to connect what they learn in theory with real creative practice.

Our dance, theatre and visual arts facilitators work closely with learners and teachers to deepen their understanding, build confidence, and spark imagination. This enhances the curriculum in ways that textbooks alone cannot achieve.

Thank you Maphisa Primary School for trusting us with your learners and for making the journey to engage with the arts in such a meaningful way.

The future of a sustainable creative economy lies in early exposure, practical learning, and continuous support of young talent, and we are proud to play our part in strengthening the creative talent pipeline for the future of African creative industries.

Last week we had the honour of hosting the Country Director of the British Council during the SoCreative Showcase held as part of the British Council Creative Economy Week. This is a series of events throughout the country over one week, where various platforms bring together creatives, cultural institutions, and industry leaders to explore how arts and culture can drive economic growth. Through workshops, exhibitions, dialogue, and showcases, it highlights the power of the creative sector to build sustainable careers and strengthen cultural ecosystems.

Last week in Bulawayo, we celebrated the talent and dedication of participants who completed the SoCreative eLearning programme, culminating in a vibrant showcase of ideas, creativity, and collaboration. Special thanks go out to Magitare Trust, who through the British Council, brought our stage to life!

When young leaders step into the responsibility of leading legacy institutions, they inherit more than a title. They accept the task of stewarding history while shaping the future.

The Amakhosi Board of Trustees and staff are proud to congratulate our Director, Gcina Warabile Mhlanga on her selection to the Issroff Family Foundation Collaborative Learning Initiative (CLI) for 2026.

While this opportunity provides valuable capacity-building support for our Director, it is equally pivotal for Amakhosi Cultural Centre as an institution. Through this partnership, we look forward to the development of a comprehensive 5 year strategic plan that will strengthen governance, sustainability, and impact; helping transform and future-proof the work of Amakhosi.

For many community and cultural organisations, access to resources for long-term strategic planning remains scarce. The Issroff Family Foundation’s partnership with Amakhosi is therefore both timely and deeply meaningful, enabling us to think boldly, plan intentionally, and build with purpose.

We also take this moment to honour and remember our founder and cultural pioneer, Cont Mhlanga, whose vision was for Amakhosi to live beyond his lifetime. This moment marks a re-commitment and a re-birth of an institution that remains a cornerstone of Zimbabwean arts, culture, and heritage.

As we embark on this future-forward journey, we extend special thanks to our Director for identifying and cultivating partnerships such as this. It is through such initiatives that Amakhosi continues to rebuild, reimagine, and renew its mission for generations to come.

Last week, the Amakhosi Gallery, in partnership with KoMaseko Cultural Village, had the pleasure of hosting Donkwedonkwe Primary School for a vibrant visual arts workshop.

Our curator, Owen Maseko, led the students through an engaging and hands-on session that sparked creativity, curiosity, and expression; bringing out the artist in each and every one of them.

A big thank you to Donkwedonkwe Primary School for choosing us to help bring the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) curriculum to life in such an inspiring way.

Want to create your own creative experience?
We’re open for school visits, corporate teams, friends, and families looking for a hands-on session in visual art, traditional dance, theatre, or literature.

Amakhosi Cultural Centre continues to make art interactive, immersive, and accessible to all.
