DO WE HAVE ORIGINAL ZAMBIAN MUSIC?
Zambian music has come a long way. In the past, many Zambians depended on music from Western countries and later from DR Congo. Even with these foreign influences, Zambia managed to create its own music styles such as Kalindula. This sound was unique and carried a strong Zambian identity.

Legendary musicians like PK Chishala helped redefine Zambian music by adding local sounds and culture, making the music sound truly Zambian. Later, artists like Nasty-D improved this idea through Zambezi music, which introduced artists such as Luwi X, Desh, Shimasta, and 2wice. Many people believed Zambia had finally found its own modern sound.

However, over time, many Zambian artists went back to copying foreign styles like Hip-hop and Ragga. Although Afunika later brought back a modern version of Kalindula, not many artists followed his direction.

Today, the big question is: Are Zambians ready to create and support a unique sound that can represent the country internationally? South Africa has Amapiano and Nigeria has Afrobeat. When people hear those sounds, they immediately know where they come from. Unfortunately, much of today’s Zambian music sounds similar to music from other countries.

Mr B Flow sir my opinion is that Zambian artists should come together and create a distinct sound that represents Zambia. Without our own identity in music, we may continue to be seen as copycats, and winning major international awards like the Grammys may remain difficult.

Will skills development alone solve youth unemployment in Zambia?

If we are serious about creating opportunities for young people, we must also build businesses that are growing, compliant, and capable of creating decent work at scale.

A young person may have a certificate, diploma, degree, or short-course training, but if the economy is not generating enough productive jobs, qualifications alone will not change the outcome.

For Zambia’s future of work to be stronger and more inclusive, I believe we need to focus on three priorities:

🔰 Practical, market-relevant skills that align with real workplace needs.
🔰 Employers who are supported to grow, formalize, and hire sustainably.
🔰 Social protection systems such as NAPSA, NHIMA and WCFCB that genuinely safeguard workers and strengthen trust in the labour market.

Youth employment is not only about urging young people to ‘upgrade themselves’.
It is about building an economy where their skills can be used, valued, fairly paid, and protected.

This is the conversation Zambia must continue to have if we want a future of work that is inclusive, productive, and sustainable.
