Building Stronger Rural Livelihoods Through Partnerships

Belm Ardent Solution is proud to have partnered with Forest Africa Zambia to deliver community capacity-building training in Luangwa District, Lusaka Province.

The training focused on strengthening community knowledge and skills in the sustainable harvesting and post-harvest handling of indigenous wild fruits, particularly baobab and ngai. In addition, participants were trained in establishing and strengthening community governance structures while integrating existing community institutions such as Community Forest Management Groups (CFMGs), savings groups, cooperatives, and other local organizations.

By equipping these groups with the necessary technical and organizational skills, the initiative is creating a reliable and sustainable supply chain for wild fruits to Forest Africa Zambia. This approach not only promotes responsible management of forest resources but also creates market opportunities that contribute to increased household incomes and improved rural livelihoods.

Why Should a Beginner Farmer Start with Vegetables?

One of the biggest mistakes many new farmers make is starting with crops that require a lot of money, experience, and patience. As a beginner, it is wiser to start small and grow with experience.
Vegetables such as r**e, Chinese cabbage, Bondwe, asparagus, lumanda, green beans, and ulumanda are excellent starter crops because:
✅ They mature quickly, allowing you to earn income within a few weeks.
✅ They require less capital compared to many other crops.
✅ They help you develop essential farming skills with lower risk.
✅ They boost your confidence as you begin to see positive results early.

On the other hand, crops such as tomatoes, cabbages, watermelons, green peppers, and eggplants require a larger investment, more technical knowledge, and a longer waiting period before harvest. Without proper experience, beginners may face higher production costs and greater risks from pests, diseases, and market fluctuations.

Successful farming is not about starting big it's about starting smart. Build your skills, gain experience, and strengthen your financial base before moving into more demanding crops.

The last time i posted about searching for a graduate willing to farm with me on a 70/30% ratio of profit sharing. Many wanted to be on a salary meaning they are also scared of their performance on the farm. But instead are looking for a monthly salary guaranteed. One graduate came through and is now on the farm. We are in the initial stages of land preparations.
This said, there are two more farm owners in need of graduates on the same arrangement. It might be similar , some changes maybe be there depending on how you agree with the farm owner. I would like to throw out this opportunity once more to the agriculture graduates who might be interested in the same. Before you get connected to the farm owner, Belm Ardent Solution- Consultancy will want to engage you on a one on one basis for a period of 2 to 3 months to ensure that the right candidates are sent out to the farms. The last time i shared about this concept: Looking for a Zambia college of Agriculture graduate interested in a 70/30% ratio to work at the farm. This simply means, no monthly salary but instead share the profits made in the above mentioned ratio. In cases where a hired labour force is required, discussions will be done in a transparent manner.
A mixture of small livestock and vegetable production. Others can be agreed upon based on market opportunities. The venture is strictly business.

How to increase cabbage production?

The last time I promised to share information on where to get farm workers. Try these guys although my challenge is the are still weak on the database of employees. They still need to run adverts which I feel any employer can do. Their fees are not affordable for start ups and thats were a big gap is.

HOW TO PRODUCE HIGH QUALITY VEGETABLES

Vegetable production to many of us farmers is used to generate income that supports farm operations.

To produce the veggies does not depend on variety ,management becomes the reason.

1. Agronomic practice
- Ensure you know the soil pH, ideal pH for both r**e and Chinese cabbage is between 5.5 and 6.8. when we talk about soil testing this is important fellow farmer, just like children cannot grow nicely in a toxic and abusive environment, the same applies to crops. Acidic soils are toxic and abusive places for crops.
- Use sunken beds in dry season and raised beds during rain season.
- Apply well dried decomposed manure or compost atleast 2 weeks before sowing or transplanting and should be applied at roughly 6kg per meter square.
- If you're transplanting and not sowing directly, plant the r**e or Chinese in rows of 30cm apart and 15cm from plant to plant.
- if you are sowing directly, I would advise you don't broadcast as it makes w**d management a challenge unless high experienced farmers. Sow the seeds 1-2cm depth, make furrows 30cm apart and lightly sow seeds, estimated distance 5cm apart. Thin out the r**e about 14 days.
- R**e gown under direct sowing matures and ready for market within 21 days after sowing.

2. Fertilizer program

- 7 Days after germination,use Compound D.
- After that, every two weeks, apply Green Sulf by Omnia Zambia . This fertilizer is very good and just as the name itself,it surely makes the veggies very greeny,shine and appetizing colour as most of you have been attracted by the photo attached.
- Our veggies are not bitter because if the fertilizers we use, I don't want to give names of fertilizers that make veggies bitter,it's business for the producer companies.

3. Pest and Disease Management.
- We advise farmers to atleast have two pesticides and two fungicides to avoid diseases and pests becoming resistant to chemicals
- We use Snocron and Belt for pests.
- Use Maconzeb and Copper hydroxide ( a long time we never used to use fungicides in r**e but now things have changed fungal diseases are now attacking r**e).
- APPEAL: I now appeal to you dear farmers to please use these chemicals correctly and nicely as advised on the labels. Your integrity in balancing between desire to make money and people's health is very important. If the chemical manufacturer says, spray and harvest veggies after 14 days, please follow this. To avoid temptations of harvesting veggies with highly active pesticides and fungicides, please spray your veggies immediately after harvesting your r**e on the same day or time.
