Researchers at Kyoto University Hospital in Japan are testing a groundbreaking treatment that could allow humans to regrow missing teeth naturally 🦷✨
In October 2024, scientists officially began clinical trials for an experimental medicine designed to trigger new tooth growth in adults. Lead researcher Dr. Katsu Takahashi described the technology as something completely different from traditional dental treatments.
The first trial phase includes 30 adult men aged 30 to 64, all missing at least one molar tooth. Researchers are studying whether the medicine is safe and capable of restarting tooth growth.
The treatment works by blocking a protein called USAG-1, which normally prevents teeth from growing again after childhood. By turning off this protein, scientists hope the body can naturally regrow real teeth. Earlier animal studies reportedly showed very promising results 🧪
If successful, the next phase will focus on children born with congenital anodontia, a rare condition where teeth never fully develop.
Researchers believe this breakthrough could someday replace dentures and implants entirely — and if trials continue successfully, the treatment may become publicly available around 2030 🌍
