Yesterday, we had the opportunity to attend the ๐Ÿ•๐ญ๐ก ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข ๐’๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ, and one of the experiences that stood out for us was seeing how irrigation is enabling the cultivation of ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ฐ๐›๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ.

It reminded us of a simple but powerful reality: ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐š๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐š๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐žโ€”๐ข๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐š๐ง ๐ž๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ.

With reliable irrigation, farmers are no longer limited to what the rainy season allows them to produce. They can venture into high-value crops such as strawberries, increase production cycles, improve productivity and create more consistent income.

For me, this is what the future of African agriculture should look likeโ€”moving from ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง-๐Ÿ๐ž๐ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐›๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐š๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ง, ๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž-๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ-๐ž๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ .

At ๐†๐š๐ฉ๐ก๐ž๐ง , we are particularly interested in how irrigation can be combined with ๐ฆ๐ž๐œ๐ก๐š๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐๐š๐ญ๐š, ๐œ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ค๐ž๐ญ ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ to create complete agricultural value chains.

The 7th Mulimi Summit was a great reminder that Zambia has enormous potential to produce high-value crops and create new income opportunities for farmers and young people.

The opportunity is before us. Now we need to build the systems that allow farmers to take advantage of it.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of bringing together farmersโ€”including couples, women, and youthโ€”for an engaging training on the importance of inclusion in the soybean value chain under the ICA-4 Project.โฃ

The training, facilitated by Restless Development Zambia with support from FAO, emphasized that empowering women is essential for building resilient and productive agricultural value chains. When women have equal access to training, resources, markets, and decision-making, farm productivity increases, household incomes improve, and communities become more food secure.โฃ
