The move by the Zambian government to introduce a 24-hour economy is a progressive and commendable step towards economic growth, job creation, and improved service delivery. Expanding business hours for markets, bus stations, and other commercial outlets has the potential to unlock new opportunities and increase productivity across various sectors. It also shows a vision of building a more competitive and inclusive economy.
However, while this initiative is promising, it is equally important to address the concerns that come with it. One of the major issues is security. With the noticeable rise in crime and substance abuse in many communities, operating throughout the night may expose both businesses and individuals to greater risks. People need to feel safe for this concept to truly work.
Government must clearly outline the security measures that will be put in place to protect citizens, workers, and business owners during late hours. This includes increased police presence, better street lighting, and community safety programs. Without proper security, the benefits of a 24-hour economy may be overshadowed by fear and uncertainty.
There is also a need to clarify how this transition will affect existing roles such as night watch personnel. Will their responsibilities be expanded, or will new systems be introduced? These are important questions that need clear answers.
As much as we support this development, it is important for the government to carefully weigh both the advantages and disadvantages. Clear policies, strong implementation strategies, and open communication with the public will be key to making this initiative successful.
A 24-hour economy can work for Zambia, but only if it is planned and managed in a way that prioritizes both growth and the safety of its people.
