Water Supply in Lusaka Stabilizes Following Infrastructure Upgrades

The Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) has reported significant progress in stabilizing the city’s water supply, especially in areas reliant on the Kafue River system. This achievement is attributed to the uninterrupted operation of the Iolanda 1 and Iolanda 2 water treatment plants, which provide 24/7 water service.

LWSC Managing Director, Engineer Jilly Chiyombwe, outlined the company’s efforts to enhance water distribution. "The supply is reasonably stable for areas receiving surface water from the Kafue River. For borehole-fed areas, we’ve implemented critical interventions, including the installation of diesel generators to ensure continuity during power outages," he stated.

The company has installed four diesel generators at strategic locations in Chainda, Ibex Hill, Nyumba Yanga, and Kabanana. Additionally, LWSC is procuring a hybrid solar system for the Margaret Mwachiyeya Wellfield and booster station to ensure a reliable water supply for Chongwe town.

This project, funded by the Government of Zambia through the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation at a cost of ZMW 5 million, is expected to significantly improve water access for affected communities.

Keith Kabezo, Siyowi Ward Councilor in Mazabuka Central Constituency, has praised the government for implementing the Cash for Work (CFW), Social Cash Transfer (SCT), and Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) initiatives, highlighting their role in alleviating poverty and improving livelihoods in the community.

Mr. Kabezo emphasizes the success of the Cash for Work program, which provides temporary employment to over 300 people in the ward each month. He described it as a lifeline for families struggling after the drought during the 2023/2024 farming season.

He adds that the program enables participants to purchase essential items like maize, significantly improving household food security.

Designed to create temporary jobs and empower youth, the Cash for Work initiative is part of broader government efforts to mitigate the drought's economic impact and combat poverty.

ZESCO Recovers Stolen Property Worth K310,000, Arrests Two Suspects

Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (ZESCO) has recovered stolen property valued at K310,000 and made significant arrests.

ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi stated that on January 10, 2025, the corporation’s Security Support Services (SSS), known as Special Forces, conducted a successful operation in Makeni and surrounding areas. Acting on credible intelligence, the team uncovered a house used by vandals linked to thefts in Lusaka South and nearby regions.

The operation exposed a syndicate involved in stealing ZESCO cables, which were transported to Kitwe and smuggled into South Africa. Two suspects, Joy Machokoto, 33, and Mbachi Mwale, 26, were apprehended during the operation.
