๐๐†/๐Ÿ‘โฃ

I hear they are gathering in their large numbers,
Polished boots and batons,
The full force of the law,
Marching to arrest you, the insolent three
Under a tree
In the full sight of the public
Asking for and sharing directions

Laws we know as sign posts,
Keeping the wayfarer from danger
Or from becoming the danger

But who would trust
In this Parliamentary Soapy
Full of drama and foolery:
In which, each week
We are introduced to a new character
At whose unknown mercy
Even if disecrating to our ways
We are to prostrate?

I say we are at risk!
I say we are at risk!
I say we are at risk!

Yes, who would trust
That the law has become
The evil we must gather against
Hide from, repelling its advice?

Who would have thought
That the shade that is meant to cover us
Would so expose
us to cruel darkness:
Delivering us wholeheartedly in the arms
of harm?

As the 2026 general elections campaign period commences on 21 May 2026, the anthology seeks to gather young people's views, aspirations and priorities in good time, for young people to use as reference for why to vote a particular direction.

Though young people record high voter turnout in almost all Zambian elections, their needs have still remained unadressed and unchanged throughout history. Unfulfilled campaign promises, limited empowerment, and poor public service delivery has characterised the behaviour of new governments.

This pattern is likely to repeat itself unless we stop it. Unless young people, long before the elections, know exactly what is lacking, not working, or a challenge in their communities and personal lives. Only when young voters decide to voter based on their priorities, and hold election candidates to a higher expectation of performance.

25/04/2026

In almost all Zambian general elections, young people record high voter turnout. Yet as many as they are turning out to vote, so too are their cries after the elections, due to unfulfilled campaign promises, lack of empowerment, and poor public service delivery by newly formed governments.

Having learnt from the past, we hosted a civic and voter education show dubbed : Young Voters' Expectations to build awareness on voting as a decision-making process, and to identify youth priorities and expectations from candidates contesting the general elections and the government to be formed after them.

In this precursor to empowering and achieving a positive youth electoral agency, together we learnt and agreed that:

โœ… Voting in an election is not a mere act of participation, but an important decision-making process.
โœ… Young people are expected to make clear, specific, sound, and transformative decisions in an election if their lives and Zambia are to develop.
โœ… No candidate is bigger than Zambia, and as such, the priorities and expectations of Zambians must be the deciding factor in the 2026 election and beyond.

We are grateful to the Global Platform Zambia for supporting this civic action, to the creatives who shared their civic aspirations, and to the audience participants who enriched the experience by reflecting, sharing, and taking a stand to vote for Zambia.

As a follow-up, on Monday look out for our announcement of an open call for short poems from young people on their priorities and expectations for the 2026 general elections โ€” to later be compiled into the Poetry Anthology.

Gerald Sikazwe is a Zambian social movement builder on a mission to develop civic consciousness among youth in Zambia and across Southern Africa. Using poetry, performance, and digital storytelling, he amplifies the voices of underrepresented communities, challenging the systemic inequalities that exclude them from civil society and governance. In 2017, he cofounded Word Smash Poetry Movement to provide a platform for Southern African youth to share their perspectives through spoken word. He also works in strategic communications for civil society organizations, advocating for issues ranging from climate justice and public spending to digital rights and freedom of expression.

As a writer and curator, Gerald has organized more than 80 advocacy-centered poetry shows, reaching over 200,000 people and mobilizing more than 1,000 Zambian youth to use spoken word as a tool for civic engagement and nationwide change. Through his work at the Centre for Young Leaders in Africaโ€“Zambia, he designs programs that equip youths, women, and people with disabilities with the skills to enter leadership positions. He also contributes to reform and advocacy for more youth-inclusive legislation and public policy. Gerald coedited Mwala, a 2021 protest poetry anthology featuring work by 31 young Southern African women. His writing has appeared in Sister Wivesโ€”a 2021 short story anthology advocating against child marriage, child abuse, and gender-based violenceโ€”and in Canvas of Truth, the 2023 Ngoma Award-winning poetry anthology exploring male and female dynamics in society. Gerald was awarded the Byron Fellowship for Social Impact Leaders in 2025, the Young African Leaders Initiative Southern African Cohort Civil Leadership Track in 2024, and the USAID Youth Lead Zambia Activity in 2019.

Gerald believes that the right to freedom of expression is key to fighting inequality. Art is a powerful catalyst for change, through which Gerald encourages every person to discover their voice and claim a stake in their countryโ€™s governance. By bridging the gap between underrepresented communities and decision-making spaces, he seeks to ensure that civic education and representation drive meaningful change.

Congratulations Yama. We are well represented.
