The recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa are not only disturbing—they are a direct assault on our shared humanity, African unity, and the very principles of dignity and coexistence.
In the strongest terms possible, we condemn these acts of violence, intimidation, and discrimination against fellow Africans. No grievance, no economic hardship, and no social frustration can ever justify the targeting of innocent people simply because they come from another country. Such actions are unjust, inhumane, and a betrayal of the values that bind us as a continent.
Africa’s history is rooted in solidarity. Many nations, including Zambia, stood shoulder to shoulder with South Africa during its darkest days. It is therefore deeply painful to witness a situation where fellow Africans are now being treated as enemies rather than brothers and sisters.
Xenophobia does not solve problems—it deepens them. It destroys lives, weakens economies, and damages international relations. Progress cannot be built on hatred. Development cannot grow where fear and division are allowed to thrive.
We call upon the South African authorities to act decisively and ensure the protection of all people within their borders, regardless of nationality. Justice must be served, and those responsible must be held accountable. Silence or inaction only fuels further violence.
At the same time, we must all reflect as Africans. The vision of a united, prosperous continent cannot coexist with intolerance and violence. We must promote dialogue, understanding, and policies that address root causes without scapegoating vulnerable communities.
An attack on one African is an attack on all Africans.
Let us stand for peace. Let us stand for unity. Let us stand for humanity.
