So, Macbuchizya of Hot Fm failed to mention 5 local rappers who rap in English and their HIT SONGS done in English.
To be clear, when I say HIT SONG, I mean a record that made COUNTRYWIDE WAVES — Radio, Clubs, Streets, Ringtones, etc. A record that can still bring the house down even if you play it 10 years later. I was trying to make a point, it being --- such music has never been Accepted locally, and that Artists had to Completely Switch their style in order to Reach Mainstream success. Its not a BLAME GAME , but its very important to MAKE MENTION FACTS! Even when the facts may Sting and offend others. What is true should be laid out plainly without any Filter.
He proved my point live on air because he couldn't even mention 3 artists and their songs ON THE SPOT. Lol. He had to pause for almost a minute, and I actually tried to help him remember. 😅
From that, we can see that what I was trying to communicate is FACTUAL.
He also pointed out that my last album was slept on, and was basically advising me to stick to what worked IN THE PAST.
My response in the full interview was simple: There comes a time when you want to do what YOU love to do. You no longer want to live to please others at your own expense.
A lot of the music I did in the past was strictly for the people and for business. On my last 2 projects, _Love or War_ and _How 2 Rap_ , I finally got the chance to BE MYSELF and make music that I truly love.
At this point in my life, I am financially secure enough that I don't need to chase a hit just to survive. I don't need to people-please or dance to the tune of a SPONSOR. I make music that I love, PERIOD, and I wouldn't want it any other way. As they say, life is about CHOICES.
Music to me is not a job. It's a way to express myself. It's something I genuinely love to do and would still do even if it gave me no financial or social benefit. This is so because I live in Hip-Hop culture, always have! probably even in my 50s I will rock a chain, ear studs and wear Jordan 1s with Dungarees 😂
Ultimately, I really enjoyed the conversation. We need more of such discussions more often, so that people get to understand us better. And many thanks to Buchi Zambia and HOT FM Zambia for giving a platform as such for us to bring out our thoughts. Bless. 🙌
