Kavindele: It is difficult for any opposition alliance at the moment to succeed

Former Vice President ENOCK KAVINDELE says it is difficult for any opposition alliance at the moment to succeed because the leaders from the political parties involved all want to be at the helm.

Mr. KAVINDELE says the leaders involved are not selfless as they have failed to decide who should lead the alliances .

Mr. KAVINDELE says the opposition alliances have also found it difficult to appeal to the Zambian people because they have no message besides attacking President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA.

He says the alliances have struggled to counter President HICHILEMA’s progressive policies such as free education and CDF, which have resonated with the people.

In a phone interview with ZNBC News, Mr. KAVINDELE cautioned opposition leaders to be careful, noting that most in the alliances have failed to offer alternative policies.

He says the alliances have also struggled because most opposition parties involved do not have structures on the ground.

He adds that the UPND was in opposition for 23 years and built structures on the ground, which enabled them to form Government.

Mr. KAVINDELE says the UPND has built a strong presence on the grassroots .

Education minister warns private universities over fake professorships!

MINISTER of Education Douglas Syakalima is concerned that many private universities in the country are misusing the title of "professor" by wantonly awarding professorships to undeserving individuals.

Mr Syakalima noted that many unqualified professors have published their works in predatory journals.

Opening the Higher Education Authority breakfast meeting with full professors in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Syakalima stated that the authority is now enforcing guidelines on the promotion of academic staff to the ranks of associate professor and full professor.

He warned all universities in the country to follow these promotion guidelines.

“Genuine professorship is not easily attained; it is not granted on compassionate grounds. Therefore, to genuinely rise to the pinnacle rank of full professor is not an easy accomplishment,” Mr Syakalima said.

COURT: HAKAINDE HICHILEMA HAS RIGHT TO SPEEDY AND PROPER MEDICATION

LUSAKA magistrate Greenwell Malumani has granted opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to be attended to by his personal medical doctor saying that it is the right of the accused to receive proper medication.

In his rulling over the matters raised by defense lawyers today, Magistrate Malumani said accused persons should not be treated like convicts granted Mr. Hichilema’s family to have access to the accused who remains incarcerated at Lusaka Central prison.

The court stated that only Mr Hichilema's wife, children, and five other family members whose names are to be submitted to the law enforcers by the accused will be allowed to visit him.

Magistrate Malumani further accorded Mr. Hichilema access to basic needs which are to be provided by the officer in charge at the correctional facility where he is remanded.

He also accorded the accused Mr. Hichilema's lawyers atleast one hour each to consult him.

Magistrate Malumani said the court would study the other preliminary issues raised before him by defense lawyers and that he will tomorrow give a comprehensive ruling.

Earlier, defense lawyers pleaded for court intervention on a number of issues among them, inadequate time to consult their client (accused), accused not allowed to be visited by his famiky members, lack of proper medical attention for the accused, and the torturing of their client when he was just an accused and not convicted yet.

The defense lawyers also alleged that togather with his five co-acused were sprayed with pepper spray on the private parts, ears and mouth.

The matter was however adjourned to tomorrow, Wednesday April 19th, 2017 at 09:00hrs.

Vice President Nalumango Prioritizes Reducing High Cost of Living for Zambians

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has assured Zambians that the government has made reducing the high cost of living a top priority.

Mrs. Nalumango, who acknowledged the rising cost of living, noted that it is not just a Zambian issue, but a global challenge.

The Vice President says the government is committed to empowering citizens through initiatives such as enhanced social cash transfers, grants, loans under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and creating jobs.

She says increasing employment opportunities will enable more Zambians to afford goods and services.
