Let's do business

19/10/2025

Gone were the days when the entire northern region of Malawi was called "the half London" because of its natural green, annual freezing courtesy of the Kaning'ina Forest and Chikangawa Forest.

It is now to tell! the generation that is coming ahead will only have # books of history but in true sense they witness a desert.
The once mighty evergreen statue has turned into charcoal mines under the good watch of the forestry department.

Time fight is now, this is a real war.

DPP, MP KAMWANJA, TAKES ON THE MEDIA

Date: 2 April 2018

Written By: Shamuda Drake.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Likoma Island district constituency, Hon. George Kamwanja, led Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), entourage; into a public strip on the media, claiming they were making a mountain out of a molehill on his development agenda.

The honorable MP claimed that Likoma Community Radio and other media houses were bias in their broadcast.

Speaking at the third of his development rallies, Monday, since he assumed office in 2014 to DPP supporters, Kamwanja said the Community radio developed a technical fault; he assisted with MK 3 million from Local Development fund but the radio management could not appreciate his support.

“I have made a lot of strides since you elected me as your representative in parliament but the media is not fairing us well.

Many things have changed, who can tell that I have done nothing in my capacity?” he lamented.

Said he: “I facilitated transportation of new ambulance after the old one went to the workshop for maintenance.

“I brought the cold-room for the mortuary which I got from my Hindu friends, is that not development and what kind of development did you want?”

According to the honorable member, journalists had eyes but they did not see that he had done a lot as far as development projects for the Island district were concerned.

“I do not understand the media; they have eyes but they do not see. They have ears but they do not understand,” adding that, “we do not make development projects on social media or on the radio, let people speak of what they have seen. Stop politicizing radio programs.”

Kamwanja was reacting to media publications that he was not attending to full council meetings, a development that doubted of his participation on budget presentation in parliament.

Nevertheless, Kamwanja, made it public through the media that his absence stemmed from official engagement in the mainland and claimed that the council authorities had never invited him to full council meetings.

He then asked the media to quit if they did not know their roles describing them unprofessional media.

In what looked like a drama, Hon. Kamwanja surprised his own supporters after he had just told them that the first five-year term was for planning and that he was seeking the second term to initiate construction plans of the much-politicized Likoma Jetty.

He then declared that he would contest on the 2019 tripartite elections and that he was equipped to construct Likoma Jetty saying the ministry responsible had assured him to disburse MK 2 billion for the Jetty project, although he did not specify of the commencement dates.

He also re-arranged his package of development projects reserved to hit the island before or after 2019 such as the infrastructure construction of Technical college, Mocho Junior Primary School and the under-five clinic at Chizumulu Island, TB ward at Chima, Mortuary, the district commissioner’s house and court house just to mention but a few.

In his welcoming speech, Village Head, Chamba assured the honorable member of his to support claiming that traditional leaders are also human beings.

“Traditional leaders are human beings, who are like any other citizen, what you are doing is commendable. Honorable MP, try to include us into your programs, more especially when you have a trip to Chizumulu Island,” said the traditional leader.

A number of DPP district executives made their speeches from wave after wave denouncing the media, civil servants and some traditional leaders and claimed that they were not in support of the ruling party.

“You media people, try to level your publication ground. Civil servants at the council there, you must work with government but we have noted that you do not consult us when you implement development projects,” the DPP gurus said in a joint venture, one after the other.

The Monday rally was the third to hold since the honorable member voted into parliament in 2014.

His absence raised more doubts if he would contest in 2019 but his coming had vindicated the Island residents after he disclosed his interest to contest in 2019.

ANGLICAN DIOCESE, AWARDS UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP TO OUTSTANDING PERFORMER- LIKOMA ISLAND GIRL.

Date: 1st April 2018.

Written by: Shamuda Drake

As one-way of encouraging and imparting, the spirit to strive for education among students at St. Peter’s Anglican Secondary School (SPASS), in Likoma Island, Anglican Diocese of Northern Malawi had pledged to offer incentives to deserving students scoring a margin of less than 20 points.

The Anglican diocese has finally lived to their promise following award of a university scholarship to the only outstanding student and a girl selected to study nursing at Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN), in the 2018/19 academic year of university study.

The diocese has officially announced to provide a four-year scholarship to Mercy Saidi, 21, a student who had unlocked the exit door of SPASS by scoring 15 points during her 2017 MSCE candidacy.

Speaking at a the presentation of the best performer awards held at Resource center hall, Sunday, Lord Bishop of the Diocese, who was also guest of honor, Fannuel Magangani, said the scholarship is a call for her services to help Likoma communities after finishing her studies in the next four years.

“We made a pledge to support her education from first year to fourth year until when she finishes her studies. We hope by supporting her she will also come back on the Island to support other people,” said Bishop Magangani.

He added; “But we have seen it today that we can give an award to a student from our own school, so we are very blessed today and grateful, that we have at least a product that is going to be a registered nurse from Kamuzu College of Nursing.”

Magangani further disclosed that the fees would come from offerings of the Anglican gathering that did not have enough for themselves, but they gave for the work of mission.

“And when they give, those of us who receive from church we need to work hard, knowing that the people who contribute do not have enough money…but they try to contribute for our well-being.”

Bishop Magangani then said he expected a lot from her that she worked hard in her studies because the pledge came with the diocesan encouragement and prayers.

In her gratitude, Mercy said studying nursing at the public university had always been her dream and with the coming of scholarship was her dream came true and she was so grateful to the Anglican diocese.

“I am so excited because it is like a dream come true, I always wanted to become a professional and spirited nurse that would be trusted by her clients. The trust only comes when a well-educated medical practitioner work to help people,” she said.

She further encouraged girls to work hard on Sciences at school saying success comes with hard working.

“The Science subjects are for everyone regardless of s*x as long as you work hard and stay focused when you put your determination on what you want. I know my parents would not manage to pay for my tertiary studies, I want to thank the diocese for helping me,” she added.

In his remarks, his father, Mr. Emmanuel Saidi, shared his excitement and attributed the fortune to God working wonders.

He said he did not expect that his daughter would receive a scholarship, instead of celebrating his daughter’s success he was full of worries of where he would access school fees for Mercy.

“I have unlimited excitement that my daughter has finally secured scholarship for her university studies, I am happy because she has made us proud. I almost gave up sending her to university, because I do not have money, God is the only way,’ he said.

He rekindled his childhood reminiscences; “I always had wanted to continue my studies up to the university but I failed due to other unpredicted state of affairs. This is God’s plan, He has solved my dreams in other way round…my dreams have been fulfilled with my daughter.”

Mr. Saidi then assured the gathering that he would prepare his daughter psychosocially to avoid nerve-racking the sponsor.

He also urged all parents to believe in God and observe His heavenly plans, saying, “This is an all-inclusive excitement because she carried a burner of all the girls in the Island district.”

Mercy Saidi received several other largesse from well-wishers ranging from cash and pledges in kind alongside Steven Mabviko who scored 16 points and his hopes reposed on Mzuzu university entrance exams.

The Diocese, St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral management and some parents protracted their gifts to SPASS teachers whose candidates passed with distinctions.

Speaking on behalf of the staff of SPASS, head teacher, Fr. Jolly Chadzuka, said under his watch he would make sure that teachers did not exploit future of their students and that girls were not s*xually battered.

Nevertheless, Fr.Chadzuka, noted with a concern that it was a nationwide scrutiny that many girls did not like sciences.

He then counselled parents and other stakeholders to form unity of education purpose if Likoma Island was to reclaim its history of astronomical performers selected to public universities.

Mercy Saidi, is the only girl who studied her primary and secondary education on Likoma Island, she is the only girl from Island district who made it to public university after decades.

LIMITED RESOURCES HUMPER DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES IN LIKOMA.

Date: 20 March 2018.

Written; By Shamuda Drake.

Likoma district council has underscored the need to reduce public demand for development projects by enhancing self-reliance on the generation of resources.

The council observed that central government and donor-funded resources were not enough to execute development activities highly demanded by Likoma communities.

Hampered by delayed funding and limited locally generated financial resources, Likoma communities have exerted pressure on council authorities for undermining their social and economic development needs.

Chairperson for Likoma district council, Mr. Samuel Chithla, was quick to outline challenges that Likoma district council was facing in the process of implementing its objectives attributing inadequate or delayed funding, received from central government and its cooperating partners and limited locally generated financial resources.

Mr. Chithila, told members of the full council at the 2018/19 budgetary meeting held at Likoma community hall, Monday, unless Likoma district council had generated enough local revenues, public service demand would remain a challenge to effective ex*****on of its activities.

Meanwhile, members of the full council have approved MK266 million budget estimates for the 2018/19 fiscal year, which they have divided into two funding categories; one being 95% from the central government fund and 5% from locally generated revenue.

Under the theme, “promoting infrastructural development for sustainable social economic development,” Likoma district council has outlined seven key objectives that will help reduce public service demand from the citizenry in its 2018/19 fiscal year.

“We have outlined seven key objectives that will help us reach out to the communities in the forthcoming financial year: promotion of infrastructural and social economic development; reduction of maternal and neonatal deaths and morbidity and mortality rates due to Malaria and provision of equitable and quality basic education to all school-going children,” he said.

He added: “the enhancement of education governance and management by increasing community participation; Promoting the adoption of appropriate agricultural technologies for sustainable agricultural productivity, food security and natural resources management and increase the availability and accessibility of water supply services.”

Chithila urged all stakeholders to work as a team and think outside the box in a run up to enhancing locally generated revenue.

Likoma district council observed it as vital for the council to be fiscally self-reliant and provide sustainable services to the community.

The council then called on Business communities to exercise ownership and trust upon paying fees and taxes to the council on time that will help to achieve the outlined objectives.

Authorities at Likoma district council have always complained on the formula that Malawi government was using when sharing the national cake, and noted with a concern that capitol hill disregards the geographical set up of the island district that demands a handsome package for various development activities being an island.

Some analysts blame Malawi government and its cooperating partners for under-utilizing the Island district believed to be the country’s economic treasure through tourism.

The island district does not have well-established policies of securing forex and alleged to have remained black market for foreign currency; entry for illegal mineral; drug and substances into other countries.

DePeCo STORMS LIKOMA, PROMISING A DIFFERENT FUTURE FOR MALAWI.

Written By: Shamuda Drake.

Date: 16 March 2018

Newly formed Opposition Party, Democratic People’s Congress (DePeCo), stormed Likoma Island during the week to unpack its Manifesto ahead of the 2019 tripartite elections.

Represented by the regional team responsible for Lake region; part of northern region whose districts are along the shores of Lake Malawi, DePeCo, said the party was established not to add up political parties in the country but to bring difference that would see the party sailing through 2019.

Governor for the Region, Mr. James Thawe, told the media that new opposition party was aware that this country was sailing through difficult times characterized by mass corruption, a development that has crippled key sectors of development such as health, education and agriculture just to mention but a few.

Thawe said no one was stranger that our country is full of corrupt characters that “we [Malawians] can eliminate by ballot, they are enriching themselves than serving people’s interests.”

The regional governor added that Malawians were suffering in hospitals without receiving drugs just because some government officials diverted funds meant for purchase of drugs.

He further said that, it was not a mere rhetoric that huge sums for maize purchase went into pockets of few individuals leaving millions of Malawians without food and some are still answering charges on the same.

DePeCo also promises Malawians to abolish quarter system in both education and human resource sectors; a system that favors the undeserved individuals into public universities and state companies.

The Opposition party claims quarter system does not employ the ideology of recruiting and enrolling on merit.

Thawe said: “We are very much aware that every political party needs to lead this nation after 2019 but our ideologies will separate Grapes from Briers,” saying that DePeCo has stored good things for Malawians.”

The political party believes in leadership that is sound and governs with people’s needs at heart.

The regional governor noted with a concern that Malawi’s tomorrow for the youths never ends; “youths are told that you are leaders of tomorrow and their now is used as militants equipped to destroy the country.

DePeCo would like to see young leaders that are instrumental to rebuild the tattered Malawi.”
“If we tell them they are leaders of tomorrow, why not today?" Then somethings are wrong. We need to change our mindset, this is reason enough to let alone DePeCo forming the next government,” he added.

Mr. Thawe further explained that unless Dr.Chris Daza became the country’s president Malawians would experience a transformational change.

He said: “Dr. Daza was ready to promote the youths by graduating their expectation of becoming leaders of tomorrow to leaders of today; leaders who would be assigned to rebuild this country and not to destroy.”

The party claimed that Dr. Daza will improve transport communication for people on Chizumulu and Likoma Islands, who sails to the mainland only once a week and saying DePeCo will improve their welfare by bringing their social and basic needs into their convenience and going to the mainland must be their luxury.”

Meanwhile, the regional team has since presided over the elections of district and constituency executives that will be instrumental to bring the party’s reality to the Islanders.

With its moto, “ together we can” and a symbol of a fist with the other hand pressing down a fist describes challenges that Malawi is going through and have been grouped into a fist and the pressing of the hand means preventing them from further tormenting Malawians.
