ZNS cuts mealie-meal prices

Zambia National Service (ZNS) has reduced the price of its Eagles breakfast mealie meal from K230 to K185 for a 25-kilogramme bag, while the same quantity of roller meal is now selling at K145.

According to a public notice issued by ZNS, Eagles mealie meal is also being sold to members of the public at its milling plants in Chongwe, Monze and Mpika.

A 12.5-kilogramme bag of breakfast mealie meal costs K92, while the 10-kilogramme and five-kilogramme bags are priced at K75 and K40, respectively. Roller meal is selling at K72.50 for 12.5 kilogrammes, K59 for 10 kilogrammes and K32 for five kilogrammes.

Stakeholders have welcomed the reduction, saying it will ease pressure on household budgets amid the rising cost of living.

Southern Province principal public relations officer Wisdom Himanteka said the move would particularly benefit low-income households.

He said a household buying four 25-kilogramme bags each month could save about K180, which could be redirected towards other essential needs.

The ZNS command is expected to issue a comprehensive statement on the price reduction.
