CHARL BEUKES
A LIFETIME OF DEDICATION TO THE LUANGWA VALLEY.
Some people pass through a place. Others become part of its history.
For more than four decades, has been part of the story of the Luangwa Valley—its wildlife, its tourism industry, its businesses and, most importantly, its people and communities.
Charl first arrived in Zambia in 1978, beginning what would become a lifelong association with the Luangwa Valley as a Professional Hunter with Big Game Safaris. From those early days, his career and commitment to the valley grew into a remarkable journey encompassing professional hunting, crocodile farming, agriculture, aviation, tourism, hospitality, employment creation and community development.
Together with Keith Asherwood and Cliff Sleep, Charl established Luangwa Crocodile and Safaris, which developed into both a crocodile farming enterprise and a memorable tourism attraction in Mfuwe. The operation featured crocodiles, a snake display, a bird aviary and a restaurant that became fondly remembered by many in the community.
His ventures also included vegetable farming and hunting operations across the Upper and Lower Lupande, Mwanya and Chufunda concessions, creating employment and contributing to the local economy.
As crocodile farming came to an end, the operation evolved into Mfuwe Crocodile Camp and later Croc Valley, South Luangwa NP, Zambia , continuing Charl’s contribution to tourism and hospitality in the valley.
Beyond business, Charl demonstrated a strong commitment to community development. Ten boreholes were established for local communities, while together with and , he supported renovations and improvements at the Kakumbi Clinic.
He also served as Chairman of the Hotel and Catering organisation and later as Chairman of the Luangwa Safari Association, contributing to the growth and representation of the tourism industry.
Charl Beukes’ story is not simply a record of a long career. It is the story of a man who arrived in Zambia in 1978 and dedicated decades of his life to the Luangwa Valley.
His legacy lives on through the people employed, communities supported, tourism ventures established and opportunities created throughout the years.
At the Mfuwe Awards 2025, Charl Beukes was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his decades of dedication, service and contribution to the Luangwa Valley and its communities.
The award celebrates a lifetime built on enterprise, leadership, service, community support and an enduring commitment to the valley he has called home for generations.
