FROST Photo Safaris is proud to present an exploratory photographic expedition deep in the heart of northern Africa, to a destination few people have heard of, never mind having the privilege of experiencing.

Chad - Ennedi ‘The Eden of the Sahara’ Photo Tour 2023. Not without reason is this region often dubbed the Eden of the Sahara. An unmistakable landscape of sandstone cliffs, pillars, and labyrinths, as well as small desert ponds known as gueltas, it supports an abundance of both fauna and flora that one would likely assume impossible given Ennedi’s extraordinarily remote location.

Our exploratory tours are carefully organized expeditions to new frontier destinations. We are constantly searching deeper, looking for unique experiences to add to our portfolio of ‘ungoogleable’ tour offerings. 75% of the Ennedi Massif is yet to be explored. Chad is our newest and most ambitious offering to date.

Join us on this expedition as we discover the hidden photographic gems of this dream desert destination. [email protected].

Made of layer upon layer of narrow cloth panels, the Egungun costume entirely covers the dancer, who peers out through a knotted fabric in front. In this scene, a dancer is blurred in the background as he twirls his outfit in a circular motion. The Egungun masquerade honors the Yoruba ancestors, and the masked dancer becomes the ancestor, spinning and twirling to send the colorful panels flying out in all directions, giving “breezes of blessings.”

There's so much to learn when venturing out from our small towns, away from our comfort zones and our perceived norms. This is where magic happens. We will travel back to Benin in 2023 and 2024.

We are constantly looking for new ways to explore. We want to show you lands in perpetual change and the people who occupy them. It's a style of travel where the emotional journey far exceeds expectations.

We documented the most amazing Gelede Mask festival in a small town off the beaten track in Benin. While most kids kept well clear of the crocodile mask, these two young boys slowly crept closer.

A small village in Benin is where we first laid eyes on the Egunguns - men draped in elaborate materials representing the spirits of departed ancestors who periodically revisit the human community for remembrance, celebration, and blessings. These mysterious living works of art are both fascinating and ominous. It is a unique cultural tradition practiced by the Yoruba and their descendants in the African Diaspora.

Sacred Masks of West Africa - Secret societies, in Africa, represent the traditional society, a kind of parallel authority. They reveal themselves through the mask’s appearance: every mask has its own meaning, and its appearance brings a clear message to the community members.

FROST Photo Safaris is proud to present you with a photo tour of the little-visited West African nation of Benin. This carefully crafted expedition reveals stories of python temples, stilted lake villages, secret mask societies and Voodoo traditions.

This tour explores the very best photographic opportunities that Benin has to offer and is perfectly timed to experience the renowned Voodoo Festival, located in Ouidah every year in January. The festival is a fascinating cultural treat commemorating the recognition of Voodoo as the official religion
of Benin since 1969. The celebration includes performances, rituals, large banquets and sacrifices which draw fe**sh priests, traditional chiefs, voodoo healers and onlookers from far and wide. Devotees assume the identity of gods, dressing up and transforming into them as they dance to the rhythmic drumming with the realm of the magical close at hand. This is the ideal photo tour for the intrepid traveler interested in remote places and cultures.

Join FROST Photo Safaris on this ultimate West African expedition to Benin in January 2024. There are only 2 spaces available on this exclusive small-group photo tour. Email [email protected] for details.

Journeys to the little-visited West African nation of Benin. Some believe that there is a thin veil separating human and spirits. If there is, it’s surely at its most translucent in Benin, where traditional practices allow these two worlds to glimpse each other momentarily. Our carefully crafted expeditions reveal stories of python temples, stilted lake villages, secret mask societies and Voodoo traditions.

FROST - Burkina Faso Photo Tour

‘Leaf Masks of Burkina Faso’ - It’s amazing how a simple idea, a seed planted, can become reality with time and consistency. 5 years ago I heard stories of the most fascinating masks occurring in remote West Africa. Details about the destination were incredibly scarce and good photographs few and far between. Fast forward a few years later and FROST Photo Safaris is traveling deeper.

‘Sacred Masks of West Africa’. In the African traditional society, the mask plays a crucial role: it represents the appearance of a spirit coming from the forest or the savanna to rule men’s actions, to scare people or entertain them, to impose peace or instigate war, celebrate funerals or initiation rituals.

In the whole Africa the word ‘mask’ doesn’t indicate just what’s covering the face of the man but it means incarnate spirit, present spirit. The mask wearer loses his individual identity to transform himself into something else. The mask wearer may die, the mask not: ‘A man may leave me (die), and he will be replaced. But a mask will never die. You’ll never see a mask’s grave. We’re above men’.

‘Sacred Masks of West Africa’ - FROST Photo Safaris continues to travel beyond the “googleable” as we return from a successful first-of-its-kind tour to Burkina Faso in West Africa.

Leaf masks of Burkina Faso represent Dwo, one of three sons of the creator God Wuro. Dwo is the god of new life and rebirth in the springtime, and of the power of nature and vegetation. His brothers are Soxo, the god of the wilderness, and Kwere, the god of lightning.

Certain destinations naturally emanate a sense of atmosphere and mood, and the Mundari cattle camps are the perfect example of just that. Hundreds of large-horned cattle gather here, there’s dust, there’s fire, there’s smoke, there’s light and there are tall herdsman in the mix. I keep transporting back to these incredible scenes through these images.

This Male Gelada flared his lips in an effort to assert dominance. He proceeded to descend the cliff face before the sun dipped below the distant mountains. They are only found in the highlands of Ethiopia and sleep along sheer cliffs to be out of reach from predators such as leopards and hyenas.

The scenic beauty and stillness of Namibia is like no other. Here, guest Dennis Stogsdill strolls through Deadvlei looking for creative compositions of the rising camel thorn trees, white clay pan, and towering dunes. The dusty conditions added a soft moody atmosphere to the images created this morning.

Namibia is open for international travel, with availability for last-minute travel. Truly isolation at its purest.

I’ve just returned home from another fantastic photographic tour, this time to Namibia. We visited two prime destinations for iconic desert wildlife scenes. What the Namib desert lacks in biodiversity it makes up for in exceptional scenic beauty. You have to put in the effort to create wildlife images here, but it's the reward of pure photographic gold that makes it well worth it! Here, two Oryx run along the red dunes of Sossusvlei.

To the Mundari, cattle is everything. Hundreds of cattle are based at this camp. The residents of the cattle camp are responsible for tending to and protecting their valuable assets at any cost. In February we journeyed to where the world’s only grass-eating primates thrive. Geladas, one of the flagship species of Africa’s alpine grasslands, are found only in the Ethiopian Highlands. They are the smallest vestige of a genus that millions of years ago stretched from South Africa to Spain and into India. Once among the most prominent primates—one species was the size of a gorilla—they were likely driven to extinction by climate changes, competition with more adaptable baboons, and our ancestors, who butchered them. Today all that remains of Theropithecus are geladas, which offer valuable, if imperfect, insight into the world inhabited by our predecessors. There is no other animal like them.
