Inspired maquette
Masters dissertation: Revitalized intersections - The Palimpsest of Durban and its Port by YP Mudaly 2021.
The project is a critical examination on port-city identity concurrently with neoliberal agendas.
The discourse of the dissertation is focused on the near future development of Durban’s premier port towards the year 2048 whilst reflecting on the developmental interest of the city to extend or overlap within port boundaries to create more dynamic and integrated programmes. The dissertation focuses on a particular characteristic of port design related to the architectural discipline being the immediate harbour mouth interface to existing infrastructure.
The project seeks to explore challenges and potentials of the site as well as combine and/or overlay programmes and typologies to benefit the fluid nature of constant movement and access around the harbour and the vision is to create a dynamic and inviting urban environment that promotes innovation and trade whilst bringing in leisure, craft, events and conference in a singular space. This living ‘waterfront’ can therefore form basis of a catalyst for the resurgence of an identified seaport.
Current images of the new cruise terminal for MSC being designed at point waterfront in the Durban harbour. The cruise terminal sits directly in front of my dissertation site which aims to catalyse the harbour and city intersection.

Throwback to 2017 when I toured Spain. This gothic cathedral nestled away in the valleys of Burgos is a testimonial quintessence of timelessness. Made to last forever - religious architecture has always fascinated me.

I don’t know what it is about an arched opening and glazing - especially seen at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (which is now the Fendi offices) in Rome. But it’s such an aesthetic.

Description: Temple Street is a street located in the areas of Jordan and Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is known for its night market and as one of the busiest flea markets at night in the territory. The night market lies in the Yau Ma Tei, Jordan part of the street.

Perspective shots from Terminal 1 at Changi. One of the most beautiful architectural feats paved with lush greenery and the most breathtaking waterfall in the heart of the Jewel. Materiality such as steel and glass enclose the envelope whilst the vegetation provide natural cooling and crisp freshness upon entry to the threshold space.
