We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of our recent project. It is with immense pride that we acknowledge the incredible talent and dedication of the artists who worked tirelessly to bring "Leretlhabetse" to life at the Northern Cape Theatre on April 4, 2026. Their passion and commitment to their craft were truly inspiring and played a pivotal role in the production's success.

Additionally, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to all our stakeholders and partners. Your generous support, whether through resources, collaboration, or encouragement, was invaluable. This project would not have been possible without your belief in our vision and your commitment to fostering the arts in our community.

Thank you once again for your unwavering support. Together, we have created something truly special, and we look forward to continuing our journey in the arts with you by our side.

05/03/2026

Let it be a date, on the 04/April/2026 at the Northern Cape Theatre, Kamvelihle Performing Arts will be presenting Leretlhabetse.

Leretlhabetse is a stirring theatrical journey that follows two young friends bound by courage, conviction, and an unyielding hunger for justice. In a nation still wrestling with the echoes of its past, they rise as passionate activists, determined to claim freedom not only for themselves, but for those whose voices have been silenced.

Drawn into the heart of civil society, they discover a living, breathing collective of organizations, faiths, cultures, and movements—united by a shared refusal to remain silent. This space becomes their battleground and their sanctuary: a powerful instrument through which they confront injustice, challenge authority, and demand accountability from those in power.

As their ideals are tested and their resolve pushed to its limits, Leretlhabetse unfolds as a testament to resilience, solidarity, and the relentless pursuit of a nation yet to fully become itself. It is a story of friendship, sacrifice, and the enduring belief that change is not only possible—but necessary.

The importance of safe space dialogues lies in their ability to unpack and address issues related to inclusivity and a sense of belonging. Today, Kamvelihle Performing Arts had the privilege of attending a dialogue at Sol Plaatje University that focused on unpacking pronouns. This experience underscored the significance of creating environments where individuals can express themselves freely and explore topics that promote understanding and acceptance. Attendees were honored to be part of this meaningful discussion.

Happy 4th Anniversary to Kamvelihle Performing Arts. We are wishing more years to come.

What an honor to have collaborated with Alexej Vancl who is an international artist based in Germany who is active as an actor, puppeteer and director in the national and international theatre scene. He performed at numerous international festivals in Germany and abroad. His work is characterised by an innovative combination of acting, puppetry, dance and music. In addition to his artistic work, Alexej Vancl is also active as a cultural politician and is strongly committed to sustainable cultural development in rural regions. As Deputy Chairman of UNIMA Germany – the German centre of the worldwide puppetry association – he is committed to the interests of artists and cultural workers and advocates for a broader perception of puppetry in Germany and worldwide. In 2022, he initiated the (e)merge project funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, which offered puppeteers who had fled Ukraine the unique opportunity to network intensively with their German colleagues. In 2023, Alexej Vancl was elected as UNIMA's representative to the German Cultural Council. For the last two years, Alexej has been working on strengthening cross-continental relationships with the artists in South Africa. For his research on the importance of Africa’s native traditions for contemporary performative arts, he has been granted with a scholarship of the Culture Fond of the State of Saxony.

What interests Alexej mostly is how the South African contemporary puppetry with its specific respectful way of treating non-human animal characters relates to old traditions and beliefs of the indigenous people. I argue that there are underlying deep reasons why animal characters in the South African tradition are treated with a greater respect than anthropomorphized animal objects in most European puppetry productions.

It's Alexej's mbition not only to observe South African colleagues working (His been collaborating with Handspring, Ukwanda, Mdu Group, now Ubuhle Development Foundation, Kamvelihle Performing Arts, South African San Development Organizations and soon with Nama Khoi Productions) but also to look for the traces of pre-colonial lifestyles and beliefs in the rural areas of southern Africa. Here, Alexej encounters old people who remember old stories, tales, songs or rituals associated with animals. It is the attitude and the tone of the people speaking about animals that interests me.
