Oskido Honoured with Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for Contribution to South African Music

Legendary musician, producer and entrepreneur Oscar "Oskido" Mdlongwa has been conferred the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by President Cyril Ramaphosa, one of South Africa's highest national honours.

The prestigious award recognises Oskido’s outstanding contribution to the arts and his pivotal role in shaping the South African music landscape. As a pioneer of the Kwaito genre, Oskido was instrumental in defining the sound of post-apartheid youth culture in the 1990s and beyond.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Oskido has excelled as a DJ, record producer, label executive, and mentor. Through Kalawa Jazmee Records, which he co-founded, he has launched and nurtured the careers of countless South African artists, creating pathways for young talent to access the mainstream industry. His influence extends across genres, from Kwaito to House and Afropop, consistently championing authentic South African sounds on local and international stages.

Beyond his musical achievements, Oskido is widely regarded as an entrepreneur and cultural ambassador who has used his platform to create economic opportunities within the creative sector. His work has contributed significantly to job creation and skills development for youth in music production, events and entertainment.

The Order of Ikhamanga is bestowed on South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sport. Oskido's recognition in the Silver category affirms his legacy as a nation-builder whose work has elevated South African music globally.
