THE MASEKELA BAND LIVE AT SANKAYI 🎺

Saturday, 29 August, Sankayi welcomes The Masekela Band for a very special evening celebrating the music and legacy of Hugh Masekela.

The band features:

Sydney Mavundla, Flugelhorn
Sandile Mgcina, Piano
Cameron Ward, Lead Guitar
Fana Zulu, Bass
Tshepa Diale, Drums
Godfrey Mgcina, Percussion
Selema Masekela Makgothi, Vocals

The Masekela Band was Hugh Masekela’s touring band for the final 15 years of his career and continues to carry his musical legacy forward.

This is one for the Sankayi calendar. Come experience the music live, in an intimate setting.

We're delighted to welcome Steve Dyer - saxophonist, flautist, composer and producer whose career has been deeply connected to the sounds and stories of Southern Africa.

From his years in exile playing with Jonas Gwangwa, to founding Southern Freeway and Mahube, producing landmark recordings with Oliver Mtukudzi, and a remarkable body of work spanning ten solo albums, Steve has spent more than four decades creating music across borders and traditions. His latest album, Enhlizweni – Song Stories from My Heartland, won the SAMA for Best Jazz Album.

At Sankayi he's joined by Teboho Kobedi on piano, Lungile Kunene on bass and Romy Brauteseth on upright bass.
