JMPD ARRESTS DRIVER FOR DUI AND CULPABLE HOMICIDE FOLLOWING FATAL DOUGLASDALE ACCIDENT

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirms a fatal two-vehicle accident that took place in the early hours of Sunday, 23 August 2026, at approximately 03:31 at the intersection of Douglas Drive and Taylor Road in Douglasdale.

Preliminary reports indicate that both vehicles were travelling north along Douglas Drive, with a white Kia Pegas ahead of a blue BMW 320i. It is alleged that the driver of the BMW collided with the rear of the Kia Pegas. The impact caused the driver of the Kia to lose control, veering off the left side of the road and crashing into a private property boundary wall.

The male driver of the BMW 320i reported no injuries. Sadly, the 24-year-old male driver of the white Kia Pegas sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. His body was transported to Hillbrow State Mortuary.

Tests revealed that the driver of the BMW, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, registered a breathalyser reading of 0.87 mg/l, well above the legal limit of 0.24 mg/l.

The driver was arrested at the scene for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol and Culpable Homicide. He was detained at Douglasdale SAPS and will appear in court soon.

The JMPD once again strongly warns motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol. Operating a vehicle while intoxicated poses a serious risk to public safety, and officers will continue to enforce a zero-tolerance stance on Johannesburg roads.

𝐂𝐎𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐃𝐀𝐋𝐄

On Tuesday, 18 August, Douglasdale CPF Patrollers responded to a house fire in Benjamin Avenue, Olivedale.

On arrival, the house was already well alight, with community members doing their best to contain the fire. CPF Patrollers immediately began assisting with firefighting efforts alongside emergency services, security partners and community responders.

The fire was extensive, with much of the roof at the front of the property having already collapsed. Despite the challenging conditions, teams worked room by room to contain and extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading.

During the response, it was reported that two elderly dogs were still inside the property. CPF Patrollers and security teams searched the house and sadly located both dogs. CPR was attempted, but despite every effort, both dogs were unfortunately deceased.

The CPF bowser was used throughout the operation and, when the water supply was depleted, the team used the swimming pool on the property to refill the bowser and continued fighting the fire. When fuel was required, assistance was provided on scene, allowing the firefighting efforts to continue.

At one stage, a CPF member was overcome by smoke and required medical attention. Additional medical teams responded to assist, and thankfully the member was given the all-clear.

After several hours of intensive firefighting, the fire was finally extinguished. The property was inspected and remaining hotspots were cooled before the scene was declared safe.

This was a difficult and demanding incident, but it once again demonstrated what can be achieved when community members, CPF Patrollers, emergency services, security partners and other responders work together.

A sincere thank you to everyone who assisted at the scene, including Courier Guy - Freedom, OnArmor, Donza Security, TRSS, TAC 54, COJEMS, FireOps, HAMNET, Netcare911, Life Fourways and ER24.

Our thoughts are with the homeowners following the devastating loss of their home and their two beloved dogs.

Working together to make the Douglasdale Policing Precinct safer for all.
