The students went to go collect clay.

A day the office. 🏺

This week our second phase of the African Pottery Masterclass resumed.

Gogo Nkosi led the students down the mountain to the river where she collects her clay.

She shared with the group information on the different clay she uses and the different locations she source the soil in these mountains.

27/01/2026

The raw material she uses is from the earth. The tools she uses are also from the earth.

On this day we watched Gogo Nkosi demostrat how she polishes her hand made african clay pots using a stone, silver soil and wild berries oil.

All this knowledge and techniques she will be teaching to her learners in the Indigenous Knowledge Masterclasses.

THE BEST WAY TO PRESERVE ANY HERITAGE IS TO LIVE IT

Leolo is a unique area in Sekhukhune region in the Limpopo province and it is home to BaPedi and AmaSwati People. Despite their rich traditions, cultural erosion threatens ancestral arts and crafts. The Heritage Hub responds by preserving and passing on this heritage to local women and youth.

Gogo Nkosi, an elder and the last traditional clay pot artisan in the village, will share her skills and knowledge through months of Indigenous Knowledge Masterclass with 10 women and youth participants. Gogo Nkosi will be sharing her practical indigenous knowledge, techniques and skills, passing them on to her participants throughout the different phases of the classes.

Come with us as we will be sharing what we have been up to these past few months on this exciting and insightful journey through visual storytelling (photos & videos). Get ready to sink your hands and mind deep into the clay as we carefully shape and mold our Heritage.
