Guru's Message to Woman

"You are enough. You are powerful."

During our Varalakshmi Poojay, Guru Deshan "Styler" Naidoo delivered an impromptu and completely unscripted message to the women and girls of GGSD and SMA.

What began as a sacred celebration became something deeply personal and profoundly powerful.

Guru spoke directly to the mothers, daughters and women of our school, honouring their strength, sacrifices, love, devotion and the countless ways in which they hold their families and communities together.

He began with words every woman needs to hear:

"You are enough. You are powerful. You are the captain of the ship. Nothing functions without you."

And then:

"Who you are is what makes you beautiful."

Reflecting on the deeper meaning of Varalakshmi, Guru reminded us:

"The universe spins on the divine axle of the Amma."

And perhaps most beautifully:

"Our Lakshmi resides in our house... it is the mother of the house that is the Lakshmi."

Guru spoke to the children about something they may only fully understand much later in life:

"You will never know how many problems in your life were removed or cancelled because of the prayer of your mother."

But Guru's message was not only about sacrifice. It was also a reminder to mothers to look after themselves.

"Mothers come first. Only when you function at that frequency can you give your children what they want."

He encouraged every mother to take time to breathe, rest and simply be.

"You are the captain of the ship."

And as our children continue to learn, grow and move forward, Guru reminded us of the unseen Shakti behind every step:

"When the children move forward, every step is elevated by the Shakti and prayer of each mother."

Guru, on behalf of all the fathers, sons, daughters and the GGSD and SMA family, we salute and honour every woman who continues to nurture our children, preserve our culture and propagate righteousness.

And to every mother:

May you always know how deeply valued you are.
May you remember that you are enough.
May you recognise your own power.
And may you always know that you carry Guru's blessings, prayers and salutations.

GGSD & SMA Varalakshmi Poojay 2026

Today, GGSD and SMA came together in devotion and gratitude to celebrate our annual Varalakshmi Poojay, honouring Mother Lakshmi and the Divine Feminine.

It was a beautiful morning of prayer, culture, music and togetherness, made even more special by the love and devotion of our mothers

Traditional offerings of maa villaku, kolikutter, sweetrice and kadhla were lovingly prepared and placed at the alter of Mother Luxmi.

A particularly meaningful tradition saw the mothers prepare the sacred red threads, which were tied to the right wrists of every student, as well as to their musical instruments. A beautiful symbol of protection, blessings and the sacred journey of each child through music and culture.

Our sincere appreciation to Kaelin Naidoo, who did a fantastic job as MC, and to Nevashnie Govender, whose keynote address added inspiration and meaning to the occasion.

Today reminded us that Varalakshmi Poojay is not simply about seeking blessings. It is about gratitude, family, motherhood, prosperity, devotion and the preservation of our sacred culture.

At GGSD and SMA, we are blessed to celebrate these traditions together and to pass them on to the next generation.

May Mother Lakshmi bless every home with abundance, peace, prosperity and happiness.

On this special National Women’s Day, we pause with gratitude, love, and deep respect to honour every woman who forms part of our Guru Gopalan’s School of Drums and the Styler Music Academy family.

Tabla is not only about thallums, konakols and lessons. It is about bhakti, discipline, seva, love, and spiritual connection. The women of GGSD bring these qualities to life in the most beautiful way. Through your gentle encouragement, quiet sacrifices, constant support, warm smiles, and unwavering faith in our Guru and our school, you bring the Divine Feminine Energy, Shakti, into every class, every pooja, every recital, and every gathering.

Your presence transforms GGSD and SMA from places of learning into homes filled with warmth, compassion, grace, and spiritual harmony. You remind us that rhythm is not only heard through the tabla, but also felt through the nurturing hearts of women who uphold our values and traditions.

Just as Mother Saraswati blesses knowledge, music, and the arts, and Mother Parvati embodies strength, devotion, and divine energy, each of you carries a spark of that sacred feminine power. GGSD & SMA celebrate Guru Purnima 2026

Today, Guru Gopalan’s School of Drums (GGSD) and the Styler Music Academy (SMA) celebrated Guru Purnima with grace, devotion and spiritual harmony during our regular classes.

The celebration commenced with a beautiful opening prayer by Kairav Govender, which set a reverent and uplifting tone for the morning’s observances.

Students, parents and management then gathered to offer our heartfelt bhakti, love and respect to our beloved Guru Deshan “Styler” Naidoo, whose guidance continues to shape not only our musical journeys, but our lives as well.

We were honoured by a beautiful keynote address by Monica Naik and a deeply moving parent tribute by Martin Naidoo, who shared how the GGSD journey has touched his life so profoundly that Guru has become his Guru too, and not only his sons’ Guru.

The celebration also paid homage to ParamGuru Ashley Kisten and the late MahaGuru Gopalan Govender, whose legacy continues to inspire our school and strengthen our Guru–Shishya tradition.

A special highlight was the unveiling of two new GGSD15 anniversary banners, including a stunning banner featuring Guru Deshan Styler Naidoo, ParamGuru Ashley Kisten and MahaGuru Gopalan Govender together. It is a powerful symbol of our lineage, heritage and 15-year journey.

We are humbled that internationally acclaimed tabla maestro Guru Saairam Varathan recently remarked that Guru Deshan Styler Naidoo had become his Guru as well. This is a profound tribute to Guru’s humility, wisdom and musical excellence.

As GGSD continues its 15th anniversary celebrations, we remain grateful for every student, parent and well-wisher who forms part of our ever-growing GGSD family, which now welcomes students from across Durban and beyond.
