“ My practice explores Blackness, masculinity, spirituality, ancestry, and identity through fluid compositions that move between figuration and abstraction. Inspired by my upbringing in Soweto, South Africa. I draw from photography, painting, and mixed media to create emotionally charged portraits that prioritise memory, feeling, and spiritual connection over documentation. My layered marks and blurred figures evoke histories and identities in flux, while challenging conventional representations of African identity and masculinity. For me, painting is both a meditative and liberatory process — a space to explore vulnerability, fluidity, and selfhood beyond imposed social structures.” - Justice Mukheli

The ‘Lost Boys’ series by Sthu Manaka can be seen at Booth C5 at the Glass Marquee at Shepstone Gardens.

In the ‘Lost Boys’ series, Sthu Manaka explores the fragile space between memory, masculinity, and survival. The exhibition reflects on what it means to grow up in environments shaped by absence — absent fathers, absent opportunities, absent emotional language — and how young men learn to navigate identity within those gaps. Through layered imagery, fragmented materials, and intimate narratives, the works examine vulnerability beneath performances of strength.

“Every lost boy was once a child asking to be seen.”

Last day to see works by Vivien Kohler

Vivien Kohler’s practice navigates the fragile space between resilience and decay — assembling discarded materials, hyper-detailed packaging replicas, and haunting figurative forms into layered reflections on migration, marginalisation, and survival in post-apartheid South Africa.

His work titled: “These 3 Shall Remain” reflects on the enduring presence of Love, Faith and Hope. Forces that anchor human experience across time. Through three juxtaposed female figures and assembled found objects, the work explores the interconnectedness of past, present and future. The use of reclaimed materials carries traces of memory and lived experience, transforming discarded fragments into symbols of resilience, continuity and spiritual inheritance.

Last chance to catch us at RMB Latitudes.

Fhatuwani Mukheli’s practice moves between memory, presence, and the politics of representation — cultivating a visual language that centres Black subjectivity with quiet power. Through psychologically resonant portraiture, restrained compositions, and warm sepia-inflected tones drawn from his Venda heritage, Mukheli reimagines histories of visibility and reverence.

His recent works engage the formal traditions of Renaissance and classical painting, reclaiming monumental space for Black bodies through stillness, light, and emotional depth. Working fluidly across mediums, Mukheli continues an ongoing investigation into lineage, identity, and how memory is constructed and seen.

Day #2: Constructed through sharp geometries and cinematic spaces, Blessing Blaai explores the emotional architectures we inherit and carry. Influenced by the tensions between public and private selves, the painting reflects on how trauma, memory, family, friendship, and societal expectations shape the ways we move through the world.

The solitary figure suspended within these fragmented spaces becomes a metaphor for emotional defence, adaptation, and identity — revealing how our surroundings quietly construct who we become.

Find us at Booth A9 Great Hall Mezzanine, Shepstone Gardens during the RMB Latitudes Fair running till the 24th May.
