Joburg Theatre is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Albert Mazibuko, a founding member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who graced our stages over many years. His contribution to South African music and storytelling leaves an indelible mark on our theatre and the broader arts community.
As shared by Desmond Dube:
“I am honoured to have experienced the artistry, humility and legacy of Mr Albert Mazibuko both as a young man of 13 years of age and as a full-on adult in the arts. I was lucky to have met the original members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo when they visited Kimberley, and years later, I was overwhelmed when I was asked to direct the musical pilot telling their story at Joburg Theatre. uBab’uMazibuko was one of the most patient teachers and one of the walking griots I have known. The arts will miss him dearly. Rest in peace, Mwelase.”
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, fellow group members, and all who were touched by his life and work. His legacy will continue to resonate through the music and stories he shared with the world.
May his soul rest in peace.
