My heart sank upon hearing the news.

The last time I had the privilege of seeing Abdullah Ibrahim live was at the Blue Note in New York, 2022. I cried during almost every song he performed that night, somehow imagining it would be the last, and it indeed, was.

“He produced the musical accompaniment for the dark days we faced during our struggle against apartheid” - mum

My brother first introduced me to ’s music when I was around 12 years old. I didn’t have the language for it then, but I felt it deeply. The way sound and words could speak honestly to the depths of resistance, refusal, belonging, and real life in the Cape especially.

Sitting in a room last week with OGs and thinkers who have consistently pushed South Africa’s artistic landscape forward was refreshing and a confirmation of why we do what we do 🔥
