Well Worn Theatre Company

Well Worn Theatre Company Eco Theatre Nomads.

For over a decade, the company has been at the coal-face of Theatre for Sustainability.

Well Worn Theatre is an established touring theatre company creating award-winning work for young South African audiences around ecological themes. Throughout that time, it has been our aim to translate the most pressing eco-social problems of our times into plays that are inventive, entertaining and accessible to all. We make theatre with ecological messages that engage empathy and imagination th

rough good storytelling. Well Worn is also known for its radical protest theatre and public art performances, utilizing masks and street theatre to highlight eco-social injustices.

For the last few weeks, I have had the immense privilege to witness the unfolding of a new work 'Isitha Sabantu'. The play is inspired by Henrik Ibsen's timeles play ‘An Enemy of the People’ as well as the courage and legacy of assassinated environmental defender Mam Fikile Ntshangase.

Opening at the Market Theatre this Sunday, the production features a cast of twelve, led by by Mpume Mthombeni, Tony Miyambo, Billy Langa, Minenhle Skhosana, Zesuliwe Hadebe and Sabelo Sekgoto.

Set in a rural Zululand village known as Hlanzeka, the school headmistress, Mam Nomsa, conducts the church choir whose hymns drift across the hills and intermingle with those sung by women out in the fields. However the bonds that knit the community begin to fray when residents discover that their lives and homes lie directly in the path of a planned new coal mine.

Soon the growl of machines reverberates across the same valley, poisoning the hearts and minds of the people of Hlanzeka along with the water and land. Mam Nomsa leads the charge against the land-hungry mine and fosters resistance to defend her home and people.

Churches, school halls, fields and kitchens become her battle grounds as she attempts to unite her community against the destructive “progress” that wears an all too familiar face.

The production features incredible music, song and puppets as well as a new script that will move you to tears and then, hopefully, stir you into action against the scourge of corrupt mining practice that threatens our country and our Earth!

Empatheatre will also host three Citizen Assemblies during the run of 'Isitha Sabantu'. The Assemblies, on the mornings of Monday 9, Friday 13 and Monday 16 March from 9am to 12.30pm, will allow time to collectively reflect on the play’s themes, to share testimonies, and to engage in public dialogue around the lived realities of environmental defenders.

Booking for the play and Citizen Assemblies is through Webtickets.

Do not miss!

Behold! Something epic this way comes...

We are absolutely thrilled to be working on a new large-scale, choral mask project for 2026 along with and the most incredible cast of Jozi physical theatre performers.

'The Herald' is a chorus of other-wordly outsiders, come to bear witness to a Planet in turmoil. They are not here to judge or to save, but rather, to watch and see. They are wondering what the hell us Earthlings think we are gonna do next on this strange planet, exploding with hope and despair.

Can't wait to see what is unearthed over the next few months with such a super team.

Thanks to Afrika Burn for providing the support so that we can play, explore and experiment 💕

Reflecting on a hard year in which our brother went missing 💔 However, it was also the year in which we made the film as well as planned and hosted the 💥Staging Climate Justice Gathering💥 at the lush Sima Kade Bush Retreat just outside of Jozi.

Along with our co-hosts .rae.of.sunshinee as well as and Pablo Routledge from the University of Leeds, we invited 25 young climate justice activists and artivists from around the country to join us for a weekend of CONNECTION, REFLECTION PLAY & REST.

Participants were invited to apply and selected from our existing networks and relationships with eco-social justice orgs. who are working at the intersection of climate justice and the arts.

In some cases, our relationship to these orgs. such as Project 90 x 2030 stretch back over a decade. Others, such as Exotically Divine, VYEJA and African Climate Alliance are new friends, with our creative connections deepening as we co-learn together.

It was a special privilege to share time and space with this glowing group of extraordinary Thinkers, Do-ers, Feel-ers and Change-makers.

It was also an extra special moment to share the first screening EVER of our film at the gathering. After all, we made the film for them in many ways 🫶🏼

As was quoted at some point during the weekend: 🔥'The role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible'🔥

Surrounded by beautiful nature, engrossed in the joy of sharing stories and making the 'invisible visible' - the climate justice movement as shaped by these humxns feels impossible to ignore.

Thank you to the facilitators for guiding us through a grounding and fun weekend. Thank you to Melissa for the glorious food. Thanks to our funders The Social Change Nest, Leeds University and the UMI for making it possible for us to gather in this way. Thanks especially to the participants for traveling far and wide to be together. Thanks to the water, the fire, the earth, the bugs and the seeds for letting us sink into you.

It is probably a very good idea to do this again and again ☺️

In September 2025, we planned and hosted a gathering called 'Staging Climate Justice' at the lush Sima Kade Bush Retreat just outside of Jo'burg.

Along with our co-hosts Raeesah Noor-Mahomed and ally walsh and Pablo Routledge from the University of Leeds, we invited 25 young climate justice activists and artists from around the country to join us for a weekend of CONNECTION, REFLECTION, PLAY and REST.

Participants were invited to apply (and selected from our existing networks and relationships with eco-social justice orgs.) who are working at the intersection of climate justice and the arts. It was also an extra special moment for us to share the first screening EVER of our film 'Burning Rebellion' at the gathering. After all, in many ways, we made the film with and FOR these very same young activists on the frontlines!

As was quoted at some point during the weekend:

Expression of Interest (EoI)

A call to artists wishing to apply for the My Body My Space Public Arts Festival 2026.

Dates: 9 - 15 March 2026.

Closing date for applications: 30th November 2025 Midnight

Currently has no confirmed funding - however we are keen to know who wants to come dance with us in 2026 - in the event that we are able to secure the required funds.

We welcome your Human Rights, Climate Justice and Environment themed proposals for new dance works, outdoor /site responsive performances, workshops and public art activations.

My Body My Space is a rurally-based annual festival held in Machadodorp and surrounds, Mpumalanga. We actively support youth and emerging artists, workshops that engage young people, and work that has a socially engaged focus. MBMS is accepting applications from artists of all ages and all levels of experience. In 2026 and as we celebrate 11 years we are interested in Dance and Physical Theatre work (i.e. work that is not spoken word dependent) that responds to the climate / ecological crisis, sees the humxn within the broader environment, and prompts us to reimagine our relationships to the spaces we move through.

We invite you to think:

1. Short format
2. Light weight i.e small touring parties
3. Low tech i.e. sound playback only
4. Can take place almost anywhere at any time for everyone

PLEASE NOTE: This EOI is NOT a commitment that MBMS will take place in 2026.

Our Story

Well Worn uses cutting edge theatre to prod, provoke, examine, dissect, illustrate and, especially, to inspire social and ecological change. We are an activist theatre company that devises new, unusual and visually beautiful stories, plays, workshops, site-specific interventions and theatrical experiences that serve to scrutinize, shed light and ultimately urge society to help fix the major social and ecological challenges of our time. Our themes are namely: climate change, social justice, sustainable living and Eco-consciousness. We make this work particularly for young audiences. We make sustainable theatre in sustainable ways.
