An Unromantic Comedy, written by Rosalind Butler, a hilarious new play about thirty something relationships stars Antony Coleman, Charmaine Weir-Smith and Jaci Devilliers. Top local theatre introduces brand new South African comedy
An Unromantic Comedy from award-winning writer, Rosalind Butler will have its world premiere at the Hilton Festival in September 2013 before its month long run at Daph
ne Kuhn’s 'Auto and General Theatre on the Square' in Sandton in October 2013. This new South African play will be directed by Craig Freimond, director and writer of the iconic films; 'Gums and Noses', 'Jozi' and 'Material' and the television success, SORTED. His most recent theatre direction for 'King of Laughter' and 'Death of a colonialist' won three Naledi awards each, including best direction. The cast are stage and screen veterans, Antony Coleman, Charmaine Weir-Smith and Jaci de Villiers. The play starts with Tony, a man in his late thirties, preparing a romantic dinner for two. Tony realizes he sent Rachel the text message invitation to dinner instead of his intended guest. Tony slept with Lucy, Rachel’s best friend. Rachel is still angry. Tony is still guilty. The attraction between them is strong. Tony is a casebook commitment phobe, Rachel’s biological clock is deafening. They reconnect and are almost intimate when the intended guest Lucy, Rachel’s ex-best friend, arrives. The three are forced to confront their infidelities, hopes, dreams, disappointments and the truth about who they really are. Do children need a father? Is marriage outdated? Is fidelity possible in a long-term relationship? Does the sisterhood code actually exist? Is love enough? Funny, painful and contemporary, An Unromantic Comedy explores late thirties relationship mayhem. Rosalind's quirky and complex writing style is well known to South African television audiences. She was head writer on SOULBUDDYZ series 1 and 2, scriptwriter for HOME AFFAIRS (nominated for best TV drama series for the Emmy's in New York); 4PLAY S*X TIPS FOR GIRLS SEASON 2 (winner of best writing team at the 2013 SAFTA Awards), ISIDINGO since 2002 and storyliner for eTV's RHYTHM CITY. Antony (Tony) and Charmaine (Rachel) take the lead roles in the piece. These two actors played husband and wife for two years on the popular soap BINNELANDERS and have performed opposite each other in numerous productions. Antony is well known to South African audiences for his 'bad ass' lead role characters in SNITCH and most recently HIGH ROLLERS. An Unromantic Comedy brings together a team of experienced and passionate theatre makers, writers, directors and performers and really shouldn't be missed. After its debut at the Hilton Festival in September, the production will open at the 'Auto and General Theatre on the Square' in Sandton on the 1 October and will run until 26 October. Tickets for the Johannesburg run are available at the theatre, or via Strictly Tickets on 0825535901 or www.strictlytickets.com.
