GAUTENG OFF-DUTY COP GUNNED DOWN IN ILLEGAL MINING FEUD

An off-duty police Sergeant attached to the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, Patrick Mvula Nzapheza (40), originally based in Orange Farm, was fatally shot during an alleged mining dispute at Ga-Mahlokwane Village, Limpopo.

It is alleged that on Friday, Nzapheza and his associate (Evans Sadike) visited a mine in Limpopo, claiming to hold a 60% shareholding in the mining operation. They informed security personnel that they had a court order directing the mine owner to cease mining activities and instructed that the owner be contacted to come. The security officers notified their management; however, the owner did not arrive.

Yesterday, Tuesday 21/07/2026, Nzapheza and Sadike returned to the mine and again encountered the same security officers. They demanded that the mine owner be contacted and instructed the security personnel not to leave while they awaited his arrival.
While they were still at the mine, several vehicles and members of the local community arrived. A confrontation ensued, which escalated into a physical altercation.

During the altercation, one was shot dead and was declared dead at the scene. The other one sustained injuries and managed to flee. He was then transported to Mecklenburg Hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.

The motive for the attack is linked to a dispute over mining operations and ownership claims.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved, and investigations are continuing.
