Not a print I thought I would be making anytime soon!

landed this beaut of a Natal Stumpnose in a time when unusual tropicals were frequenting our Wild Coast point.

Being a sucker for fish with interesting details, I naturally jumped at the opportunity to capture this mutant bream.

As expected, the big scales, massive tail and strong mouth printed exceptionally well, and I am so happy with the results of this gyotaku print.

I finally made it to my dream river👇

I recently made the journey to a place I’ve dreamed of exploring for years. It's remote, and with diesel prices what they are, walking the wild, exquisite coastline felt like the best way in.

Fishing without a vessel was tough. I worked through every lure, every retrieve, with only a few chases to keep my spirits up until I eventually came right with a small but hard-earned fish🐟

I left with more questions than answers, but a little wiser, and already drawn back for another attempt.

Siya and I rested easy, thanks to the comfort of our .co mattress😴

When the water is clean, it can be tough to find the fish🐟

But when you do, the abundance can be staggering!

When harvesting from the sea, it's always important to think long-term. Especially since I share this important resource with my community, many of whom depend on the health of the sea for sustenance.

Don't catch your limit, limit your catch. Enjoy the scenes and appreciate where you are!

Indian Goatfish 👇

I’ve wanted to make a gyoatku print one of these chaps for some time, especially after hearing how good they taste.

With those tassels on their chins, used to locate crustaceans from the sand, along with their beautiful fins and broad scales, I knew it would make a great print.

The meat is soft and pearly white. Delicious, with a slight crayfish flavour.

And yet, despite all of that, I’m not sure I’ll take another.

Some fish are meant for the pan.� Others feel like they belong to the reef.

With their bright pink bodies and luminous fins, these might be one of those I leave behind. Something to admire, rather than chase.

Then again…�we’ll see how hungry I am on the day😉

The stinkiest gyotaku ever?

I found this crab washed up on the beach. It was still intact, which doesn’t happen often.
�It felt like an opportunity I couldn’t ignore. A gift from the sea.

The smell, though, was something else😂

�Printing indoors was out of the question, and with the weather turning, I had to wait it out.

When I finally got to it, the usual approach didn’t work. Too many angles, too much going on. It was a frustration crustacean🦀

�So I took it apart and printed it piece by piece. Slowly and carefully, it started to come together.

Not every session is about clean results.� Some are just about figuring things out. And these are often the most valuable to an art practice.

I ended up with one print I’m happy with…�and thankfully, it doesn’t carry the smell.
