Bubble the vintage camper

Bubble the vintage camper Bubble is a circa 1965 fibreglass vintage caravan. Westfalia design. South Africa. She was apparently one of only five made in Wynberg, Cape Town, South Africa.

Originally the story that we were told was that Bubble is a 1965 Foster fibreglass home-build caravan. Two have been relegated to 'chicken coop' status, the other two written-off (one blown up for a movie). Or some such. We are in touch with the son of Bubble's builder's - he has some wonderful stories about this van, and how it was towed by his father's split-window VW camper. She was originally

olive green up top and off-white below. We've learned that she's based on German Westfalia or 'Westy' design. Possibly the 310-4 model. We're going to give her a second life so this is the story of how she becomes a proper vintage 'love bubble'.

Bubble has been ‘at the sea’ for a week … and we are settling into holiday mode. Our first January holiday was two weeks, the next year three and now … four. Taking time off so early in the new year is a big leap - it also allows us to revisit how we look at work and play. We’ve worked hard to set up our businesses so that we can take time off but there are always issues to sort out - and we do this without regret. Business continues, and swimming must be done.

Bubble in bubbles. She’s been standing a long while (eleven months) and had developed a little garden of algae and moss. She needed a wash before her big outing. Apart from some accidental scraps (wheelbarrow 1; Bubble 0) and her parking out in the sun, her paint job is still looking remarkably good. 60s fibreglass for the win!

Whoop whoop! Bubble hasn’t been out at all since last February. She has steadfastly continued to serve as comfy accommodation for guests and family but really needs to stretch her legs, so to speak. A friend (thanks Troy) sent us this clip of her next destination, our favourite pitch at Plett!

Bubble’s background

Originally the story that we were told was that Bubble is a 1965 Foster fiberglass home-build caravan. She was apparently one of only five made in Wynberg, Cape Town, South Africa. Two have been relegated to 'chicken coop' status, the other two written off (one blown up for a movie). Or some such. We are in touch with the builder's son who has some wonderful stories about this van, and how it was towed by his father's split-window VW camper. She was originally olive green and off white. Subsequently we've learned that she's actually taken from a mould of the German Westfalia or 'Westy' design. Possibly the 310-4 model. Mr Foster would have had to switch the orientation to fit our right-hand drive road conditions - not a small task. We're going to give her a second life so this is the story of how she becomes a proper vintage 'love bubble'. Keep an eye out for more Bubbles coming in 2019/20.
