This isn't an isolated incident. Zimbabwe has been grappling with a growing drug crisis, with many police officers and government officials implicated in the trade. The country has seen a surge in the abuse of prescription drugs, including Broncleer cough syrup, which is often used as a cheap high.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has vowed to crack down on drug peddlers and users, with Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri announcing a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. Those caught with illicit substances now face up to 15 years in prison Β² Β³.
