Nicholas Zakaria and Alick Macheso are widely regarded as two of the most influential figures in Zimbabwe's Sungura music history.
๐ผ The Birth of Khiama Boys
In the early 1980s, Nicholas Zakaria โ affectionately known as "Senior Lecturer" and "Madzibaba" โ assembled a group of exceptionally talented musicians to form the legendary Khiama Boys.

Under Zakaria's guidance, the band transformed the Sungura genre. As the group's mastermind and lead guitarist, he mentored Macheso and taught him the foundations of Sungura rhythm, composition, and performance.
๐ Macheso's Rise to Stardom
After years of learning and performing alongside his mentor, Alick Macheso emerged as a gifted bassist, vocalist, and songwriter.
In 1997, he took a bold step and formed Orchestra Mberikwazvo, launching one of the most successful careers in Zimbabwean music history.
Despite his immense success, Macheso has consistently acknowledged Nicholas Zakaria as the man who laid the foundation for his musical journey.
๐ Zakaria's Later Years
Following Macheso's departure, Nicholas Zakaria continued leading the Khiama Boys and producing music.
Beyond music, he also worked as a haulage truck driver while remaining a respected mentor to many upcoming artists. His iconic long beard, apostolic faith background, and fatherly guidance earned him the beloved nickname "Madzibaba."

The relationship between Zakaria and Macheso was built on respect, gratitude, and family-like affection.
When Nicholas Zakaria passed away, Macheso led the nation in mourning, describing the loss as a painful wound and paying tribute to the man he called:
"My musical father and the cradle of my career."
