Wim van Zyl Art

Wim van Zyl Art South African artist exploring memory, mortality, and transformation through assemblage and symbolism. Creator of The Tabernacle of Memories.

I grew up in a funeral home in the old Transvaal, surrounded by death but drawn to beauty and mystery. My art is built from the relics and curiosities I’ve collected—animal skulls, heirlooms, and found objects—each one carrying its own history. A midlife reckoning led me to explore tarot, taxidermy, and ritual, seeking meaning beyond my craft as a hairstylist. From that search came Emerging the Ch

rysalis of Being and, soon after, The Tabernacle of Memories—a body of work that balances life and death, the sacred and the profane. Motifs of skulls, wings, saints, and symbols weave through my work like prayers made tangible. Each assemblage is a meditation on transformation and the beauty of objects that outlive us. As I often say, “My art is a way of honouring objects.”
