While the Creative Change Laboratory is in hibernation until our next lab, we are still thinking about how art methods can be used to change the world. Here are a series of infographics which creatively unpack how the Covid-19 crisis is impacting access and enjoyment of education.

Is it just me or does woman rhyme with human

"My art works is about raising awareness about gender-based violence as well as refugees. I used dark-pigmented women instead of light pigmented women because even thought there's discrimination against race there's also colourism." - Winnie Mazarire. Winnie was a collaborator during season 1 of CCoLAB.

Taking green spaces to neighborhoods that need it

"Green is a colour with many benefits for health. Grass, trees, they're all very beneficial to health. But also there is a lack of green spaces in township areas. There is a lot of development taking place, a lot of houses packed together, it's very rare for somebody to interact with a green space", Masechaba Khoza. Doll-making as healing for women

"Dolls are one of the most common represenations of women that we have. Often it's more focussed on the aesthetics of how women look and how they should look. But I wanted to focus on what makes a women on the inside, what burdens women, what they have to hold and what they have to carry inside of them", Sydney Adams. The Creative Change Laboratory Journey

Just over a year ago the Creative Change Laboratory (CCoLAB) was born. CCoLAB was always an experiment, an experiment which asked - what happens when we give marginilized youth skills and tools to build creative solutions to the problems they're facing. In October 2019 we hosted our first exhibition. The exhibition displayed these innovative solutions and created space for critical conversations on the powerful ways art can reshape the world.

Maverick Citizen: Weekend: Love and Justice: Sixteen young South Africans paint a better world

Learn more about the Creative Change Laboratory's process and methodology in this article by the Daily Maverick.

"A capacity to recover quickly from setbacks – resilience, in other words – is something Khan and Marnell’s group of young people will have to learn and relearn if their aim is to continue being activists or artists once CCoLAB wraps up with an exhibition at Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education at the end of October. Dealing with intellectual disdain, hurtful personal comments and threats of violence are part of what they signed up for. It goes with the territory: pressing for social change has always been a thankless task."

Malala Yousafzai, Emma Gonzalez, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and – most recently in the news – Greta Thunberg are not the first young people to breathe fire down the establishment’s neck, but they have turned the world’s attention to the fact that teenagers are neither indifferent to the world’s ...

Harnessing art in our activism

In a world defined by persistent inequality, violence and discrimination – new solutions are needed. Imagine, a school for creative resistance. A space where young people who are often silenced – young women, young LGBTI folk, landless youth and indigenous youth – find vision and voice.

The Creative Change Laboratory (CCoLAB) will be a unique creative space where a group of 20 young people can workshop and test unconventional solutions to the problems facing their communities. The CCoLAB will use creative methods (visual art, drama and creative writing) to enable participants to share their experiences of inequality and test prototype solutions. Using Facebook and Instagram participants will be able to reach out to a broader audience and inspire action.

CCoLAB is based on the Creative Resistance toolkit, co-authored by John Marnell and Gabriel Hoosain Khan and tested at various sites across southern Africa; and will be hosted by the Office for Inclusivity and Change at the University of Cape Town.
